David King, Pastor of Concord Baptist in Chattanooga, TN has a post on the church’s blog, that is a good read titled Abortion and the Early Church.
The bottom line is, that as it is in scripture, the church has always recognized abortion as murder in the womb.
Exodus 21:22-25 (New American Standard Bible)

Now the Law makes it clear the loss of a life in the womb is 100% equivalent to the loss of a human life outside of the womb. God sees absolutely no difference, life is life, regardless of where that life resides. Whether in the womb or outside of it, God sees it as life just the same and taught man in the Law that it is.
Of course we don’t seek personal private vengeance.
Matthew 5:38-39 (New American Standard Bible)

Which is why we don’t go after anyone involved in abortions, to put them in some contrived church prison. However, laws of men to maintain respect of life are not a bad thing. To never shed innocent blood and not murder is consistent in the commands of Christ and His Apostles. So given they taught murder is sin, MURDER IN THE WOMB IS STILL SIN. Although Exodus 21:22-25 is under Mosaic Law, the church is bound to never approve of murder given scripture such as Romans 13:9-10. We know the Law is for murderers, 1 Timothy 1:8-11.
Abortion is murder and no Christian should ever approve of it. Christians should stand against it as against any other form of murder. And lives inside the womb cannot be taken or thought of as in any way less than lives outside of the womb.
I was doing a little study of the Hippocratic Oath and learned that once upon a time, even pagans fully respected life in the womb and refused to be party to abortion.

It strikes me as amazing that people (in the UK, at least) are more vocal about animal rights or gay rights rather than the rights of the unborn

I don’t know if you have heard about the S.L.E.D acronym as an argument against tithing, but here’s a website that explains it pretty well
http://www.caseforlife.com/sled.htm
This also describes how the excuses for abortion also can be used to excuse slavery as well.
