One thing that is done in Roman Catholicism, which I call the cult of Mary, is that they give attributes to Mary that are not in scripture. Some groups outside of Roman Catholics also buy into some of those lies. It is important to avoid these misconceptions, which grant stature to Mary that is not only unbiblical, but admonished against, Luke 11:27-28 [click to expand link].
The two videos below go into detail regarding the idolatry of Mary worship. Each is one hour in length. Please watch both videos in full before making any comments.
Rob Zins, the ex-Roman Catholic in the videos, now heads the group A Christian Witness to Roman Catholicism.
I’ll add one final note as to why Mary should never be called “Mother of God”, in addition to the fact Jesus dissuaded granting her any exclusive claim of “mother” status in Matthew 12:47-50 [click to expand link].
Consider the following:
John 4:24 (New American Standard Bible)
|
God is spirit. This means Mary birthing Christ did not in any form grant Him His deity and she never held any authority over the deity of Christ. God the Son reveres God the Father, but God is Spirit and has no “Mother”. All that occurred regarding the deity of Christ coming to earth was an act of God alone and Mary was nothing but the vessel used. A vessel born into sin as we all were and was granted grace as all Christians have been. All persons of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit are co-eternal and all existed before Mary and before the world was formed. Mary did not give God anything in the way of deity, only humanity.
(Efforts to promote the cult of Mary are not allowed in comments here, 2 John 1:10-11)

Here is the entire prayer which was in the second video at around minute 47. From this source, the year of Mary was not 1950 as Larry states in the video. It was December 8, 1953 to December 8, 1953:
PRAYER OF POPE PIUS XII This prayer, dedicated to Mary Immaculate, was composed by the Pope for the Marian Year (December 8, 1953-December 8, 1954), which was proclaimed to mark the centenary of the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.
Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty, and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, 0 Immacuate Mother of Jesus and our Mother, Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side.
Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your conception until the day on which, after your assumption into heaven, He crowned you Queen of the Universe.
O crystal fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths! O fragrant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume! 0 Conqueress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin, which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell!
O well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart. Bend tenderly over our aching wounds. Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed, comfort the poor and humble, quench hatreds, sweeten harshness, safeguard the flower of purity in youth, protect the holy Church, make all men feel the attraction of Christian goodness. In your name, resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recognize that they are brothers, and that the nations are members of one family, upon which may there shine forth the sun of a universal and sincere peace.
Receive, O most sweet Mother, our humble supplications, and above all obtain for us that, one day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars: You are all-beautiful, O Mary! You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honor of our people! Amen.

Such patently worshipful words belong to a deity. It certainly seems that in the RC church there is a contender for the question put in psalm 73:25 “Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.”

That plus the other “prayers” on that page are total blasphemy.
Roman Catholicism can’t be called anything but a cult and its sad how many are now running to team up with that cult. As Zins mentioned and detailed well, it’s still a cult and Vatican II changes nothing.

These two videos were very enlightening. I went to a catholic mass, with my mother, about four years ago, and left in amazement. I was so shocked when I heard the priest telling the congrigants that they should intercede to Mary, who would in turn intercede, on their behalf, to her son. I was sitting their, probably with my mouth open, not believing my ears, thinking “the bible says, the only one that can intercede on our behalf is the Lord Jesus Christ and him alone. What is wrong with these people? Dont they read their bible.” The priest liken it to mothers who are able to go directly to their children and ask for favor on behalf of someone. My mother, has been a catholic for years, she is in her 70s and believes it is ok, she say they do not worship Mary. I will be able to use this information and even let her watch the videos. Thank you.

That is the problem with RCC and why they are not us. What is the final authority that man has available to know the truth about God?
Roman Catholics will tell you the 66 books of the Bible, plus the apocrypha, plus their “church fathers” statements over the years. Which amounts to their “church fathers” being the final authority, since whatever their “church fathers” say that the 66 books of the Bible say is what they will believe. And the apocrypha does not fully agree with scripture, which is why it was kept out of the cannon and was never embraced by real Christians even before the Protestant Reformation. (Roman Catholics act like everyone accepted what they embrace before the Reformation, that is a lie. God always had His remnant.)
So basically Roman Catholics follow the traditions of men and it’s everything Jesus warned about in Matthew 23.
Christians say the Bible of 66 books is it and the final authority of reference.

This is why we reject the Todd Bentley’s and all who promote extra-biblical things. Because they ALL are doing the EXACT SAME MESS that has resulted in the mess known as Roman Catholicism and every other cult.

Another astonishing statement from another prayer to her on that webpage: I consecrate my heart to thee for ever, my only desire being to love thy divine Son Jesus. Mary, none of thy devout servants has ever perished; may I too be saved. Amen.
In one breath, the petitioner consecrates his heart to Mary forever, but immediately states that his only desire is love her son. Oxymoronic! How do you consecrate your heart to one person in order to only love another? Next, he asks her that he might be saved.
The church’s only function is to direct anyone inquiring for his own salvation, to “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” This is what the apostles did. Even when Mary was still alive on the earth after Jesus’ resurrection, she would have done the same; and would have also denied possessing any divine privilege beyond that.
Reading Pius XII’s prayers, it is clear Mary is deified by such language.

Oops. forgot to close italics after the word, “her.”
should read “Next, he asks her that he might be saved,” etc..

It simply proves they are talking about another Jesus and another Mary. And today some are suffering that heresy better than they should, 2 Corinthians 11.

I wonder something: Are there any prayers in praise of the Father or Jesus in the RCC that have the same flowery wording as those to Mary?
Let’s substitute the Lord Jesus’ name in the above prayer to Mary to see to which it is truly fitting to address with such excessively lofty words (overlooking any obvious practical or doctrinal problem for the sake of the point):
Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty, and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, 0 Immacuate Savior and our Great Elder Brother, Jesus, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side.
Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every . . . mere creature, . . . after your ascension into heaven, He crowned you with Glory.
O crystal fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths! O fragrant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume! 0 Conquerer of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin, which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell!
Well if that does not prove to someone that prayers to Mary are idolatry, the person who disagrees only proves they are under strong delusion.
