The Big Long Ball. Honoring God or Honoring Man? Looks Like Man to Me! And SURPRISE, Charles Stanley Does it Too!

by @ 4:35 pm. Filed under Nuts on Parade

I guess even Pulpit Pimps have players balls!

(And I sat in this pimp’s assembly for over 7 years, so don’t tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about!)

Glitzy gala set to praise Eddie Long AJC.com – 08/17/07

People love Bishop Eddie Long, or look askance at him, but there’s no ignoring him.

The flashy, vibrant minister has been a major player in Atlanta’s church scene since he arrived 20 years ago at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.

Under him, New Birth grew from a respectable 300-member congregation to a megachurch claiming 25,000 members, with TV ministries, a fitness center, a school and a program for the homeless and addicted. The sprawling campus in DeKalb County is a do-not-miss stopover for political candidates.

Long, 53, is celebrating his 20th anniversary at a black-tie gala at the Georgia World Congress Center tonight. Up to 1,400 ticketed guests at $175 each are expected.

Luminaries scheduled to honor Long include Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, radio personality Frank Ski, and R&B and soul singer Kem.

Long said by phone he is proud of his church’s accomplishments: It sends volunteers and donations to local schools, works with the homeless, provides money and workers for the annual Hosea Feed the Hungry, and it sponsors a massive Easter service.

“We are touching our community,” he said.

His flash and cash also attract critics.

Long lives in affluence and preaches a gospel that mixes the prosperity of American capitalism with a conservative theology that says God blesses people financially as well as spiritually.

A nonprofit started by Long and the church provided him more than $3 million in salary and benefits between 1997 and 2000, according to nonprofit records.

Since then, Long’s salary and benefits have not been divulged.

Long will brag about times he’s given something away, but it seems financial records for Long’s club are hard to find and we don’t have any clue what he’s taking in these days for himself. If he’s only paid via “love offerings” why the charity mess? And what’s there to hide about what he’s taking in whatever the amount, if he’s working for “God”? What oversight group is Long reporting to? How many times have elders at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church (aka Club New Birth) denounced Long for his debauchery and false prosperity doctrine? To my knowledge NEVER, because Long has it set so that he’s running the show. Anyone called an elder there can’t get rid of him if they wanted to, but they get nice seats in the assembly and special parking spots. And even in a packed building, a seat is always made open when politicians come by. I’ve seen smut music spinner Frank Ski get a nice spot in the assembly too, never mind that God frowns on personal favoritism in the church assembly.

Regarding Long’s bravado form of charity, something I saw him do many times when I was there:

Matthew 6:1-8 (New King James Version)

1) ?Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2) Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

3) But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.

5) ?And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

6) But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

7) And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

8) ?Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

And if you want to know what’s wrong with a pimp having a ball, read Matthew 23. It would be wrong even if he was not a pimp.

And did you know, even Charles Stanley is having a self serving function. Folks, even Stanley has some of the false prosperity doctrine and tithe pressing bug in him. Learn some truth about so-called tithing here. God’s best blessings are eternal and you are not “limiting” God as Stanley falsely claims if you don’t ask God for more material things. Jesus said seek the heavenly things instead, see Luke 12:29-34. God had James to note that your earthly life is less than vapor, James 4:13-17. Christians must work to be humble. Stanley mentions James 4:2, but says nothing of how that MUST be read with James 4:3. Can’t mention James 4:3 when you’re telling people to ask for what they WANT and DESIRE, because that would make it too obvious that Stanley was delivering bad teaching. It’s one thing to have an actual need and petition God about it, but to act as if you should keep praying over wants and desires, plus tithe mandating for wealth and claiming the poor don’t have faith to give more to a “mega-church” and that might be why they are poor, is total prosperity mess! Read the humility of how Jesus told us to pray in, Matthew 6:9-13. It’s “our daily bread”, like the bread from Heaven mentioned in Exodus 16 and how God taught them not to hoard it.

I see no difference between whether it’s Long or Stanley doing false prosperity and self serving acts.

Their special events, they are self serving, even if proceeds go to charity. The apostles were humble men. Jesus showed us humility. I say no thanks to the Players Balls, or whatever they decide to call functions to laud themselves. They might claim it’s got something to do with the Lord, but THEIR NAME is at the top of the banner!

(Hat tip to Monica who posted the article link in a comment over at Pulpit Pimps. I knew this function was coming up, but before this the only article I had found was by a rag that had links to some unChristian sites in it and I didn’t want to link that here. Otherwise I might have noted this all here sooner.)

update 8/17/2007 8:40PM:
I need to point out one other thing about Stanley’s talk about how he feels you can get what YOU want. He and others claim you?ve got to be very detailed and specific with God. Like God only hears those who can specify accurately. While Jesus said in Matthew 6:8, that the Father knows our needs before we ask. So does God know all and even know what we need before we ask for it and does the Holy Spirit intercede for us given we don?t know what to ask for as we should, as noted in Romans 8:26? Or is Stanley correct when he claims we?ve got to be so SPECIFIC?

The answer is obvious, Stanley is wrong, his doctrine is OFF. And it’s not about YOU, it’s about the Lord and YOU accepting HIS WILL to be done.

Even when Stanley mentions God might not will something for you, he says maybe you?ll get something bigger or maybe it was not right for you, but it’s missing James 4:3, because he’s leading people to ask for wants and desires.

This is a sad example of what happens when an elder veers their message from the cross and ends up on the broad road.

Pray the Lord changes their hearts and while they are lost in improper teaching, it would be good to avoid them. The Southern Baptists, which Stanley is part of don’t prescribe to the model of having a group of elders lead each individual church. That’s a problem, because like with Long, Stanley could use a group of co-equals to keep him in check.

And yes I know about Stanley’s divorce. I’ll just say, that’s another problem I won’t delve into in this post. I’ll just say, keep in mind, he’s not been with another woman far as any of us know, so he’s not an adulterer.

I guess he got that from Matthew 29–“And as He departed, Jesus told them, ‘Whenever one comes to thee, to celebrate how much thou hast done for the Lord, and how the Lord could not have accomplished anything were it not for thine hard work and sacrifice, thou shalt command him to pay thee three denarii for the grace thou hast shown in presenting thyself to him.” (/sarc)

I knew the $175 price tag for Long’s event would raise some eyebrows. And believe it or not, that pimp ball’s tickets are CHEAP compared to what Stanley has going on. Keep in mind, Stanley preaches out of Atlanta, GA, but is having an event in Texas. So anyone of his assembly that wishes to attend will have to (are being led to) setup reservations at the Gaylord Texan Resort. From my basic mock reservation entry, I found that a stay from 8/30/2007-9/3/2007 with general seating cost $677. That’s the shortest reservation stay available for that event, from what I found on the provided reservation page. Stay from 8/30/2007 – 9/4/2007 and it will cost you $841. That’s general seating too.

And TD Jakes will be having his “For Ladies Only Conference” at that same resort later this year. See the registration packages for that. If you don’t stay at the resort and just want to walk in the door, $200! If you stay at the resort for 2 nights or more your bill will be a minimum of $430.00.

Getting that anooointing cost these days you know 😀 😆 .

Off-topic: Does Stanley still preach that “even for a moment” salvation? Where he taught that if you believed in Christ “even for a moment”, that’s enough to guarantee your salvation?

I can understand the need to bring light to these dark and questionable practices mentioned in these postings. However, do we need to resort to the same kind of vile name calling as I heard Munsey say in one of his offering appeals? Are these souls beyond God’s grace and forgiveness? Is anyone praying for their repentance? Also, could anyone share with me (granted, naive about what’s being posted here)what would be a biblical and acceptable “way” to do what these “spiritual leaders(?)” are doing? Could you give me a comparison/contrast of these so-called pimps with mega-church ministeries that are “doing it right?” Would the budget/expenses for a U.S. store-front church and pastor be the same as for a Billy Graham Crusade effort? I’m not supporting any particular ministry mentioned in my posts or the ones above. I’m just trying to be independent, wise, and discerning. Thanks for your patience with me. –Augi3

    Augi3,

However, do we need to resort to the same kind of vile name calling as I heard Munsey say in one of his offering appeals?

I find my words in this post to be rather tame. Seriously. Check out 2 Peter 2, I never even got into calling false teachers beasts and dogs going to eat their own vomit. And even that would be fitting. God said it via Peter having written it. I would have been within scripture’s description to use similar words.

Are these souls beyond God’s grace and forgiveness?

If God perhaps shows them mercy, but at this point they are feasting on the flock, again 2 Peter 2.

Is anyone praying for their repentance?

In the context of loving an enemy, Matthew 5:43-45. I pray all who are deceived repent. Scripture shows me they all will not. I let the Lord’s will be done and leave it at that. For now, the sheep must be warned. I was once part of Eddie Long’s assembly, over 7 years. I attempted to inform internally before leaving. So I don’t come at this already knowing that efforts to reach them go ignored. These men are deluded and deceiving saints. Should I sit and be quite while saints suffer spiritual molestation? If this were physical abuse I could use harsher words and nobody would complain. We are talking about masses of souls being deceived, worse than physical abuse, the results have eternal consequences.

Also, could anyone share with me (granted, naive about what’s being posted here)what would be a biblical and acceptable “way” to do what these “spiritual leaders(?)” are doing?

That cannot be done, because what they are doing is abusing scripture and leading saints the wrong way. So what they are “doing” can’t be done right because it is wrong.

Could you give me a comparison/contrast of these so-called pimps with mega-church ministeries that are “doing it right?

First, you should understand that in scripture, churches would help each other rather than trying to suck from other congregations. There was not this monopoly and Wal Mart style approach that we see today. However, there are large church assemblies that do things in a more honorable fashion than those mentioned above. Some that stand more firmly on sound doctrine. Consider the approach of John MacArthur versus Joel Osteen. While Joel has apologized for his words to Larry King in that interview, the overall approach and doctrine you’ll hear from someone like John MacArthur is far different from a Joel Osteen or Eddie Long or Charles Stanley.

Really, you’ll find better from folks that you don’t see on TV trying to make a name for THEMSELVES. Stick to the scriptures and those who honestly uphold them. Odds are, they won’t be on billboards around your city.

Would the budget/expenses for a U.S. store-front church and pastor be the same as for a Billy Graham Crusade effort?

You should be asking why Billy Graham feels the need to take a flight a few times a year to do an event here and there, when missionaries work the overseas areas all the time and churches already exists in places like NYC? If it’s a US based “crusade” someone like Graham could have simply advised people to support local church groups in a given area if there is a need there. If he wants to help overseas, support those who are working overseas day and night, instead of jetting in and out to places others are continually ministering in. I know the Graham’s have charities that minister helping ministries overseas, that’s a better approach. What you are speaking of with those “crusades” are Religious Industry types who do road shows. Consider the terrible doctrine of someone like Billy Graham.

Take a read of Matthew 23 with those Religious Industry figures in mind.

The bottom line is, does the doctrine they present and their actions stand well against scripture and the example given by Christ and His apostles? The issues with the doctrine presented by someone like Eddie Long and Charles Stanley, with their false prosperity doctrines are spoken firmly against in 1 Timothy 6. We are to flee such and so saints must be informed. If they were sexual predators, I’m sure you’d understand 😉 .

  6. art123 Says:

If God made everyone rich as Stanley and Long would have you think, then Jesus doctrine would be an contradiction. Didn’t God say that He is a man that do not lie, nor the son of man that He shall repent?
