For TBN, Tuesday night was yet another night to pull one of their name it claim it types from their stable. This time it was Eddie Long. The man holding the title “bishop”, while being so greedy for money that his church’s tithe (yes he’s a tithe enforcer) envelopes include an area where you can enter your credit card information. And don’t go thinking it’s just for people who want to debit from money they have. There are check boxes for people with an American Express or Discover card, along with Visa and Mastercard. You know I went there for 7 years, so I should know. (And no I never gave via credit card.)
So as usual, who better to trick people into giving TBN money, than a master at the game? Paul and/or Jan Crouch sit back and watch the performer entice the dollars right out of viewer’s pockets.
See the video below of performer Eddie Long in action.
With Eddie Long, you quickly notice, that even if he provides a scripture, he’s not going to stick there for long. He’s like a babbling scattergun. So I just took some clips that I found interesting and will provide some analysis.
Notice Long compared giving to TBN, to when God troubled the water for healing at the Bethesda pool. See John 5. At Bethesda, all someone had to do was get in the pool for healing, they didn’t need to sow a seed. When Jesus healed someone there, the person healed did not need to sow a seed first for healing. Long’s comparison of giving money, to God troubling water is BOGUS.
Then Long went on the defensive and claimed the old “touch not my anointed” line. This is the cheap method used by pimps, to try and insulate themselves from scrutiny. The phrase is pulled from Psalm 105:15, but as usual with pimps, they take it totally out of context. If you read all of Psalm 105, you notice that the “anointed” discussed in verse 15 is Israel. They were considered “anointed”. For Christians, all are anointed with the Holy Spirit. If we are to say that this Old Testament Psalm applies to Christians today, it applies to all Christians. Not some band of nuts that use it as cover when they trash scripture. But in all honesty, Christians are not promised the same physical protections granted to Israel. Notice verse 15 spoke of touching and harm, it was in the physical sense, not simply someone saying words. Christians are promised:
2 Timothy 3:12 (New King James Version)
|
So don’t go thinking the physical protection granted to King David is the same guarantee that you have, because being a Christian means you signed up for potential persecution at any time. Your soul is protected from death, hell and the grave, your physical body is a totally different matter.
Jesus warned that many charismatic types would come along, that are not honestly following him.
Matthew 24:24-25 (New King James Version)

Long told people “it’s time to possess the kingdom” and shortly afterwards said:
This is a good work, you must sow, you must give, you must share, you must enlist, you must become a part of this…
Oh, I must give to TBN? What ever happened to not giving under compulsion? Long took giving from being optional to mandatory. What TBN and Long spread are a twisted word, so I can’t say it’s a truly good work. It’s a pack of pimps lining their pockets and claiming God commanded that I fund them. On the contrary, the scriptures show that we should do just the opposite. Don’t fund false teachers and avoid them.
Long compared people who watch TBN, but don’t give to the Jews who were denied entry into the promised land. What a crock.
Then Eddie Long pulled up Super Pimp Steve Munsey. If you’ve been reading here, you know Munsey is no man of God. Well Long has been watching Munsey and come to the opposite conclusion. But what else would you expect a fellow pimp to say? Long claimed that he watches Munsey with pencil and paper. Pimps have to learn from somebody you know… Long then mentioned that he “ain’t too big to know placement in the kingdom”. Long was basically having a canonization ceremony on air for Steve Munsey ๐ .
But I guess such behavior from someone who ran a passover scam and a bogus charity is to be expected.
Then Long mentioned, that saying things just to make big crowds is not a good idea. It’s like he criticizes himself, while right in the mist of running a game of lies. It’s like showpiece self criticism, to make himself appear to be honest. This reminds me of the salesmen, that while making me a sales pitch tell me that they “used to” scam people.
In another clip, Long spoke of how “timing” is important. As if you have to give now or you’ll miss out! He led people to feel God was “processing” them for “this moment”, as in give the money now. Then he said:
Your building is built, your finances are there, God’s touching somebody, your stuff is done, your house is done. Watch this, and even your body is healed.
It was classic name it and claim it talk.
Then he said:
You need to be calling in (repeated), this is a moment of empowerment, a prayer’s about to go and everybody enlisted…there’s too many lines open (repeated)
As in, you’ll get it all if you pay to TBN. It’s like these pimps play on God as some sort of mafia protection racket!
Long told people to pledge and go into “sweatless victory” and:
Don’t let the spirit catch you on the outside.
Could you imagine if games like this were played during ANY TELETHON except one for a supposedly Christian TV network? It would cause national OUTRAGE.
Eddie Long also went into his usual lines about a “shift” and “fresh anointing”. I wonder if the person on the last night of this mess will claim that they’ve got some cumulative anointing ๐ ?
Then Long asked people to “pray in the Holy Ghost”. Babbling that was supposed to be talking in tongues proceeded and then Long himself babbled some. Are we really to believe that the Holy Spirit would reside in the mist of bogus claims being made by someone making things up, to fool people into giving their money? Excuse me, but I don’t believe that God works in deception. And I KNOW I don’t need to give to TBN when the man on the screen says jump! The group babble session, even if it had been true talking in tongues, would have simply been foolish. As the apostle Paul noted:
1 Corinthians 14:23 (New King James Version)

I would prefer to think that Eddie Long is out of his mind, rather than to think that he’s willingly deceiving masses for profit. But I know the real answer is the later.

[…] Posted by healtheland on April 12th, 2007 TBN moneychanging take one. TBN moneychanging take two. TD Jakes marching to the beat of the Al Sharpton “Fire Don Imus Parade” take three. Now as to why I am criticizing Jakes for demanding Imus’ firing? 1) Because Jakes has taken a beating from the black community and black leaders (like Sharpton) for his closeness to George Bush and for his general conservatism, and this is his attempt to silence the critics and broaden his appeal among blacks and the left. (The Council On Foreign Relations, to whom Jakes has, er, ties, LOVES people with broad appeal like RICK WARREN, OPRAH WINFREY, and ANGELINA JOLIE.) Now, you’d THINK that black Christians would oppose Jakes over HIS OPPOSITION TO TRINITY, but let us just pray on that one, shall we? 2) Because Jakes HAS to be smart enough to know that the media’s going after Mel Gibson, Michael Richards, and Don Imus (three scalps in less than a year, when previously the “Jimmy The Greek” type of things only took place one in awhile) is just laying the groundwork for their being able to go after CHRISTIANS in a few years. Denounce homosexuality, abortion, or false religions? Not only will you get the Imus treatment, but if you do it inย a public area and your accuser can claim to be “threatened” or “intimidated” by your words (or “demeanor”) THEY WILL HAUL YOU OFF TO JAIL! Canada and Great Britain have already fined and chased from the airwaves televangelists for “offending” homosexuals and Muslims. Jakes is contributing to what will lead to the same happening over here. And you know what? I bet Jakes knows it. […]

I’m a nothern Canadian remote from Christian USA but I just installed satelite TV. I recently watched the Canadian Miracle Channel raise money. Oh you guys!! This is the age of entertainment for the masses. Why so shocked? and always trying to critique the televangelists. Remember the story of the wheat and the tares. The phony and the genuine are aloud to grow up together until the harvest. The trick is to know the phony from the genuine.

OLLYWEST – Your assessment of the parable of the wheat and the tares is incorrect.
Matthew 13:24-30 NASB
Matthew 13:36-43 NASB
Notice, the slaves that are held back from gathering early are the angels of the Lord. There is NOTHING in that parable that prevents good seed or wheat from warning fellow wheat about bad seed or tares.
Christians are supposed to judge those who claim the Lord’s name. Judge if they are someone fit to associate with.
1 Corinthians 5:9-13 (New American Standard Bible)
What you see above is the height of covetous and swindling, being done in the Lord’s name. That is the work of immorality, not the Gospel of the Lord Jesus. The teaching is false, we are not to be with people who are immoral and avoid false teachers. As it is written in 2 Peter 2.
Eddie Long is shown there trying to sell the gift of God as something that can be bartered with money. That is heresy as noted in scripture.
Acts 8:20-21 (New American Standard Bible)
Saints are instructed to avoid people like Eddie Long.
Romans 16:17 (New American Standard Bible)
It is an act of Christian love to sound the alarm when someone is trying to fleece the flock. If your biological brother were about to be scammed by someone about to sell them a malfunctioning car, you would war him. You would not hesitate. Even more so with our brothers and sisters in Christ we are to help them avoid acts of heresy.
1 Thessalonians 5:14 (New American Standard Bible)
This age is well described in 2 Thessalonians 2.
Showing and warning about these false teachers and their tactics helps saints better identify the phony from the genuine.
