MSNBC reported on how TD Jakes and Joel Osteen are enriching themselves in the name of Jesus and loving every minute of it.
They are preaching the gospel of prosperity, but their ministries look nothing like the ministry of Jesus and the apostles to the poor. They don’t reflect or teach how Christians should live, that is explained in 1 Timothy 6:6-11, but rather reflect the mentioned teaching that Christians should all FLEE away from.
1 Timothy 6:6-11 (New King James Version)

To all who pay to see preachers speak, I ask you, how much did Jesus charge for the Sermon on the Mount? And if that sermon is greater than anything these preachers today can muster, why do you pay to see them? It’s rhetorical question. Just remember, you can always read great sermons like the Sermon on the Mount for free.
The following exchange takes place in the video, among other things.
Tyler Mathisen: “Some people criticize that about you. They say, he lives well, he has beautiful clothes, he drives well, lives in a good house. Is their anything wrong with that?”
TD Jakes: “Living well in America is not wrong. Ah, it’s how you go about getting the money that is an issue. Gives me a great deal of credibility, whether I’m working with ex-inmates, to say that it is possible to have the American dream without selling drugs. I cannot say that if I haven’t done it myself.”
Notice Jakes claims that he must be rich and teach others to be rich for the sake of the “American Dream”. What happened to doing the work of Jesus, who said money changers were turning his house of prayer into a den of thieves? Rather than ensuring there is no “den of thieves”, Jakes and Osteen are themselves the new thieves. They travel the nation hocking their goods and peddling the name of Jesus, which apostles like Paul refused to represent.
2 Corinthians 2:17 (New King James Version)

The next time one of them tells you that they have a life changing book for you to buy, tell them that you already own a Bible and you know how to read it yourself.
Because the message has people “feeling good” and telling them they’ve got earthly riches coming, people (not just Christians, but even people who deny Christ) are taking in the false doctrine as if it is truth.
Jakes said:
I think that Jesus is the product.
Now we reduce Jesus to being a “product”. Yup, peddling!
Osteen agreed with Mathisen and said “God” is a growth business. These people are enjoying making money off you, don’t you understand?
TD Jakes did not move from WV to TX for the sake of ministry, but greater wealth.
The announcer notes that Joel Osteen’s best selling book is a largely secular “think big” message. But Osteen’s big message is earthly bound. While Jesus told the poor in spirit to think of something bigger than a change in their earthly situation:
Matthew 5:3 (New King James Version)
|
Jesus promised riches for the righteous in heaven and did not focus people to seek earthly gain. But Jakes and Osteen often focus on Old Testament scripture (if they offer scriptural text at all) and earthly gain, because it is earthly gain that they enjoy themselves.
And although I didn’t capture any of the video, I saw Paula White on TV this past weekend. WHAT A MESS!!! Lord help her and those following her. She had a big flashing “P” behind her head, while giving an Old Testament based sermon, to tell ladies that their “big” (earthly big things in their favor) was coming.
The BIG has already come and his name is JESUS. When he comes again, I doubt he’ll be looking for big flashing “P”s.
The original “Don” of Prosperity Pimping, Rev. Ike is so proud of these nuts.
…
Rev. Ike dared to go where most theologians, Bible teachers, and preachers would not. As an evangelist, on TV, radio, and at mass meetings, he had the ?nerve? to PREACH ?Prosperity NOW!? ? long before it became popular to do so. He was dismissed by some ?mainstream? and ?fundamentalist? people, but now many famous preachers, teachers and authors sound just like Rev. Ike ? teaching prosperity!
…
Notice once upon a time the lies of the prosperity doctrine were the exception, not the rule.
I noticed this current short sermon on Joel Osteen’s web site and I want to know if you see WHY it does not line up with scripture?
Are you a people pleaser? Always giving, always encouraging, always rescuing? God does not want you to sacrifice your happiness to keep somebody else happy. That’s what I call “a false sense of responsibility.” When you free yourself from that?and give those people to God?you’ll not only have more time and energy, but I believe you’ll be happier and better able to fulfill God’s plan for you.
Notice there is no scripture? Because if he actually attempted to use scripture to endorse mess like that he might be tripped up by words like this from men like the apostle Paul.
1 Corinthians 4:10-16 (New King James Version)
|
Now I can’t say I live the life of Paul myself, but I’m not going to lie to you and try to sell you a book based on things that are contrary to scripture!

woah! whoever wrote this thing must really be against bishop td and pastor joel! funny..
are u envious? or are you just a hypocrite and want people to tell you that you’re zealous for Jesus?
didn’t you read in the old testament that most of God’s people (men of God e.g. abraham, isaac, jacob, david, solomon, etc) were blessed so much because of their obedience? solomon asked for wisdom, God gave him riches, much more than td jakes and joel osteen ever had – or will ever have in their lifetime.. because God said that there will be no one richer than you in your time and in the coming generations.. and look at Job, didn’t God test him and when he passed the test God doubled his possessions? before the test he was rich, after the test he was richer!
and why aren’t you doing articles about them? they’re so rich that even if you lived 500 lifetimes you wouldn’t have them!
and didn’t the bible say that God IS THE SAME yesterday, today and forever!?
God’s heart is to bless His children.. If He blessed His people in the old testament, He will also bless His children in this generation..
i’m not trying to start an argument here.. this is just my stand.. and whoever you are, think about what you’re saying..
and about that scripture paul wrote, didn’t you get the sentence? nothing is wrong with money, the issue is, how you use it.. do you know pastor joel and bishop td enough to tell the world that what they’re doing is wrong?
God gave them creativity and they used that gift to earn money – is earning so much money a sin?
well, i’m so sleepy, so i’ll just pray that God will teach you His ways.. and for God to bless you.. God bless!! ^_^

jestat – Do you realize that while God does not change, his covenant with us is no longer the old, but new? And the figures you mentioned were all working under the old covenant. Do you realize that Jesus and the apostles did not live the lives of rich men for a reason? As the apostle Paul noted in the verse I cited above, there was a desire for us to IMITATE their level of forsaking the wealth of the world. Knowing Christ has better prepared for us in heaven and he will take care of earthly needs.
I certainly don’t say any of this for my own personal gain. Jakes and Osteen have proven that me saying the opposite of what I’m saying here is far more profitable a venture. I say it because I learned the truth. I was once where you are and this is here to help you. I love you and hope you see there is a division in your Bible that separates the Old Testament from the New Testament, that includes our approach to earthly wealth.
Jesus said this to his disciples that had forsaken material wealth to follow him.
Matthew 19:23-24 (New King James Version)
Jesus did not leave any wiggle room in his statement and repeated it for emphasis.
Once Jesus came on the scene, notice who claimed earthly wealth and who refused it.
Luke 4:5-8 (New King James Version)
Notice every verse I cite for you is new covenant scripture, not old covenant. It is important that you realize God did not change, but just as the covenants have changed we are now held to a higher standard. Given the sacrifice of Christ was higher than that of an earthly animal. Earthly animal sacrifices and hopes for earthly rewards was old covenant. A sacrifice direct from Heaven and hopes for heavenly rewards is the new covenant. There is no more reason to seek that God bless us in material items, given he has provided us the greatest gift of all in Jesus Christ. The material no longer matters. Which is why Paul said to be comforted that your BASIC needs are met and that is all. Keep in mind Paul was speaking to people in LITERAL DEBT SLAVERY.
Notice how Jesus and the apostles used money in their own lives. They were homeless while giving and instructing others to give. I know that the doctrine of Jakes, Osteen and others like them are contrary to how Christians have been instructed to live and so that is how I know what they are doing and saying is very wrong.
Peter said in 2 Peter 2:3 of false teachers, that “By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words…”.
Notice the new covenant emphasis against desires for personal material wealth.
Notice how Jesus addressed someone who said they wanted an earthly inheritance.
Luke 12:13-21 (New King James Version)
Certainly the apostles were rich towards God, but they said in earthly terms that they were literally hungry and homeless.
God used the apostles in a most mighty way and they did not use their given gifts to earn money. Paul spoke against “peddling the word of God”. (see the above post) So peddling the word of God for earthly riches certainly is a sin. A sin people like Paul REFUSED to commit.
Notice where Jesus said the riches of his followers are, not here on earth.
John 14:1-6 (New King James Version)
Please read the words of the Lord in Matthew 6. It is the words of Christ, not TD Jakes or Joel Osteen. He does provide us earthly things, however we are not to brag of our charitable deeds and store up goods here. We are supposed to give here and not worry about storing up as Jesus said. Jesus and the apostles were given plenty and still they continued to give away to the point of being hungry and homeless. Something Paul asked us to imitate.
And when they gave, they gave to the poor. Not to a pastor that told them people should give him 10%. If you don’t already know, you might want to read about tithing. The old covenant is being played against you for people to enrich themselves. Give to the needy, not the greedy.

OK.. I respect that..
But what if.. “What if” God wants to bless you with $1,000,000.00? God just wants to bless you.. And let’s say that you know that it is God’s will for you to receive that money because of your obedience to Him.. What would you do? Will you receive it?

This is an excellent question and it would be far more easier to answer if we were not Christians
.
Given we are Christians, we have to consider how the Lord would have us to use it and I just finished viewing an excellent totally free 2-part video series on this very subject.
A good brother named George W. Greene made the videos and I highly recommend checking them out in full. (Each video is less than 30-minutes long.) He runs the site InYourBible.com.
Hope that helps.

I want to make sure I understand everyone’s comments correctly. Independent Conservative, are you saying that God does not want us to have earthly treasures or simply not be obsessed with them? Are you saying these preachers only teach prosperity and about keeping everything for self, that they do not teach the joys of giving? Do you pay tithes to the church?
March 25th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
KP26 – I am saying that the treasure God wants us to have is the gift of Jesus Christ.
They teach giving with the desire of receiving an earthly reward.
Regarding tithing, please read my latest post about that.
Please read all that has been provided here. It will help you to fully understand my position.

I just noticed, that my links to my post about tithing in these comments were not working properly. I’ve fixed those links.

I think as you grow in the Lord you accept a more modest outward appearance, but the inside is what counts.

IC, as I was watching the video when Olsteen told the congregation to hold up their bibles and say it says what it says they are and they have what it says they want to have. Well, I believe that the whole congregation better read it instead of holding it because I wouldn’t be surprise if God has condemned many of them, but bless a few. You just don’t know how the Spirit is rolling in that place as far as predestination. They could die today or tomorrow in their sins, but Olsteen is not preaching about this. Another thing, God has already decided who’s to be rich or poor.

You’re right art123, but I pray those who are the Lord’s that claim His name there make it out before their earthly life ends or Christ’s return. I pray if the Lord so wills that they all turn from that to truth. Those who are the Lord’s could lose a lot in the 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 sense if they remain there. God’s plan works according to His will, but I pray for them all, not knowing who the Lord might call. And we’ve seen some make it out already, prayerfully more will too. I made it out from a club of a pimp, so you never know who the Lord will help see the truth. Cause if He helped me out being the nut I am
, it’s true anybody could be the next to be freed from that bad doctrine.
We don’t know who’s going to make money, it’s all as the Lord wills. As God by Christ through inspiration of the Holy Spirit had James to admonish us in James 4:13-17.
