Kentucky Rock Radio Station Averts Phelps Clan Protest With One Hour Radio Debate.

by @ 4:09 pm. Filed under The Truth Shall Set you Free!

You might recall I was pretty upset when Mike Gallagher offered nut case Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas one hour of free air time in exchange for not doing a funeral protest. She had already been on his show debating and my main problem was that Gallagher was offering her time where she would be allowed to speak for one hour without any debate or interruption. It appears a radio station in Kentucky was able to avert a Phelps protest at a funeral without caving like Mike Gallagher did.

First review the details about the formerly planned protest and who the funeral was for.

Kansas church plans protest before funeral

A church group from Kansas that has protested at soldiers’ funerals around the country plans to go to Bardstown to picket before the funeral for the 10 people killed in a house fire Tuesday.

The group from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka plans to demonstrate 45 minutes prior to the funeral in order to show that their deaths are God’s punishment for a “filthy” nation that has disobeyed “His will,” said Shirley Phelps-Roper, a member of the church.

A one year old and two year old twins died in that fire, along with others. The nuts in the Phelps clan were planning to once again claim it was a sign from God. I wonder if the Phelps hold protests like that when one of their own members dies? It’s not like they know a thing about the people they go to a funeral to protest about, so they can’t claim they are any better than the people who died. And even if they knew the people and felt they are better than them, going to protest at their funerals is still insane. Saddam Hussein probably even had a quiet funeral, but wait, the Phelps visited Saddam when he was the murdering dictator of Iraq.

Radio station WLRS-FM offered queen nut case Shirley Phelps-Roper one hour of INTERVIEW TIME in exchange for not protesting at the funeral.

Group calls off Bardstown funeral protest

The Westboro Baptist Church will not protest at today’s funeral for 10 people who perished in a Bardstown house fire this week.

Radio station WLRS, which broadcasts on 104.3 and 105.1 FM in Louisville, let one of Westboro’s members air the church’s views of an angry God from 3 to 4 p.m. yesterday in exchange for canceling the protest.

Bardstown Mayor Dick Heaton called the deal “good news.”

The WLRS disc jockey who uses only the name Mo said he called the church to offer the deal while he was driving home from work Thursday night.

The on-air session, interspersed with a few commercials and some of the station’s usual music, was heated.

Mo let Phelps-Roper cite biblical examples supporting the group’s beliefs about gays, questioned her, then gave his own viewpoint.

He told her that she did not know the family involved in the fire and was imposing her own judgment as if it were the will of God.

The MAJOR DIFFERENCE between the WLRS deal and the deal Mike Gallagher cut, is that the nut case was not allowed to vent without being publicly denounced in the process.

We’ve all heard what WLRS had that day many times before. It’s called an interview debate! I’ve never had a problem with people having the nuts on and calling them nuts to their faces. If the Phelps’ are willing to accept in-studio verbal beat downs, instead of taking them on the streets, I can’t complain about a station cutting a deal like that. I have a problem when they are allowed on air without someone being able to call them what they really are. Insane nuts, that are not truly representing the Lord.

I feel WLRS showed Gallagher how to deal with nuts. Don’t give them free time without interruption. Have them agree to a regular interview, where they can be told off.

You can hear clips of the radio interview here and here.

For a rock radio station host, I think Mo handled her well. Now Mo should consider asking his employer Radio One to play something more suitable for children on all of their stations, like Gospel ;-) .
