Marine Toys for Tots Foundation Says No to Jesus Dolls.

by @ 5:15 pm. Filed under Evangelicals Under Attack

It is so sad that so many people espouse charity that was endorsed by Christ, but seem to miss the most important part WHICH IS JESUS. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation gives out toys for CHRISTMAS, but they are refusing to give out a doll that is supposed to represent Christ and recites scripture. This is a prime example of how a tenet established for good can be twisted and abused by man into something that no longer glorifies God at all.

Toys for Tots Declines Talking Jesus Dolls; Says Its Recipients Come From All Backgrounds

LOS ANGELES Nov 14, 2006 (AP)— A company that sells Bible-quoting Jesus dolls said it was surprised and disappointed that the Marine Reserves’ Toys for Tots program turned down its offer to donate 4,000 of the talking dolls.

“I believe as a churchgoing person, anyone can benefit from hearing the words of the Bible,” said Michael La Roe, director of business development for Valencia-based Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co. and its one2believe division, which makes the line of Bible character dolls.

Bill Grein, Toys for Tots VP says:

..
“We can’t take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family,” Grein said Tuesday. “Kids want a gift for the holiday season that is fun.”

Oh so now giving a gift that is associated with Jesus can’t be fun?

For crying out loud Marine Toys for Tots was founded in the name of giving at Christmas time.

Origin and Evolution of Toys for Tots

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The idea came from Bill’s wife, Diane. In the fall of 1947, Diane handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked Bill to deliver the doll to an organization, which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When Bill determined that no agency existed, Diane told Bill that he should start one.

Reserve Center was located. Marines have conducted successful nationwide campaigns at Christmas each year since 1948. The initial objective that remains the hallmark of the program today is to “bring the joy of Christmas to America’s needy children.”

From Christmas 1980 through the present, Marines have collected and distributed only new toys.

The goal is to deliver a message of hope, which will build self-esteem and, in turn, motivate needy children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. A shiny new toy is the best means of accomplishing this goal.

The message of Jesus brings hope, builds self-esteem and, in turn, motivates needy children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. But for some reason Toys for Tots can’t accept that.

With all their charity during a time when Christ’s birth is celebrated, they refuse anything that might “offend” someone because it’s associated with Christ himself.

This is why I feel Christians should give to organizations that offer the actual ministry of Jesus Christ with their charity.

Some feel simply “giving” is what Christians are supposed to do. This is untrue and a sad misconception expressed by many Christians and non-Christians alike. Christians are not to simply give and nothing more. Our primary goal is to preach the Gospel to the poor. Jesus confirmed this and affirmed himself as “The One” to the disciples of John when asked by saying:

Luke 7:22-23 (New King James Version)

22) Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.

23) And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”

The dolls were not rejected on the basis of being a graven image that might be worshiped like God, but because they are related to the Christian faith. Toys for tots is offended by Christ. (Personally I don’t like people making “Jesus” dolls, because they could be easily treated as something to worship and Christians should not worship before graven images.)

It is sad that a holiday established in America on the basis of celebrating Christ’s birth has become so devoid of Christ’s actual goals for some.

TailOverTeaKettle found that the dolls are now being accepted, but nobody knows what they will do with them. They just claim they have found “appropriate places” for them. Although Toys for Tots might not know it, the most appropriate place might be with someone who does not know the Lord.

I see that the Toys for Tots program has now changed position and will accept the gifts (http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/11/16/america/NA_GEN_US_Jesus_Doll.php)

What I find most interesting is that they did not want to offend Jews and Muslims. For Christmas. Really.

Now I know that many people enjoy the ’secular’ Christmas holiday without subscribing to the Christian religion. But what are Jewish and Muslims who might be offended doing getting *Christmas* presents anyway?
