ATLANTA - A federal judge Thursday rejected former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell’s request to remain free pending appeal of his tax evasion conviction and sentence. Judge Richard Story ordered Campbell to begin serving his two-and-a-half years in prison within three weeks.
Story said Campbell has not shown a likelihood that the appeal will result in a new trial or a reduction in the sentence.
Story’s courtroom deputy, Rick Goss, said Campbell has until August 21st to report to federal prison, although the location has not yet been determined and the date could change.
Campbell was sentenced June 13th after being convicted in March of three counts of tax evasion. He was also fined 63-hundred dollars and must pay almos[t] $63-thousand in back taxes.
