Westboro Baptist Church Debate! ACLU versus ACLJ on Sean Hannity Show. (Audio)

by @ 12:13 am. Filed under Audio, Nuts on Parade

People have been shocked by the actions of the nutcases of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka Kansas. And various legislative bodies have appropriately passed laws to try and stop them from spewing their garbage in the presence of grieving families, attending the funerals of fallen soldiers. The ACLU has found that this “church” of insanity is something they wanted to help out in court, to try and do away with some of the new laws.

Let’s face it, the nuts of the Westboro Baptist Church have the media’s attention and there is always some Liberal group willing to ride a media wave. So in comes the ACLU, to ride the wave most would never dare touch. Which shows they are by far the most despicable legal group in America.

Sean Hannity hosted a debate between Shirley Phelps-Roper’s ACLU attorney Anthony “Tony” Rothert and ACLJ attorney Jay Sekulow.
(The ACLJ is a group that often kicks the ACLU’s butt in court and stands for the rights of real churches, not cults.

The Phelps do not represent primitive Baptist churches at all, although they claim to follow those teachings. It is horrible that the Phelps even try to associate themselves with primitive Baptists. I love primitive Baptists and was even in worship at a primitive Baptist church this past Sunday.)

The ACLU attorney (Tony Rothert) said he disagrees with the Phelps’ actions, but does not find their acts to be “despicable”, when asked directly.

Hannity was really trying to figure out how anyone in their right mind would defend the Phelps clowns. And it resulted in this telling exchange.

Hannity: On a human level, why do you want to be a part of a case that brings suffering to military families?

ACLU Attorney Tony Rothert: I think the best way we can honor brave soldiers, especially the ones who’ve died is to honor the first amendment and not cheapen it.

The ACLU is so twisted, that they attempt to claim that defending the most disrespectful of nuts, that spew hatred at dead soldiers and their families is somehow a way to show those soldiers “honor”. Which proves you can’t be in your right mind and work for the ACLU.
(And for the record I think Republican and sometimes ACLU attorney Bob Barr is an idiot. I never liked him!)

At one point Rothert attempted to bring up an instance where the ACLU supposedly defended Sean Hannity, but Hannity quickly squashed that by mentioning how the ACLU stabbed him in the back.

Jay Sekulow focused on the fact people outside with bullhorns might be heard inside the funeral service and therefore cause a disruption.

This was a very interesting debate.

What a misleading post. You leave out that ACLJ was against funeral protest bans when it was gay people whose funerals were being protested. That give them zero creditability on the issue. And why don’t you check out for yourself Hannity’s relations with the ACLU. Aside from his assertion that he was stabbed in the back, you will find no credence to his statement. In fact, the ACLU stood up for his anti-gay ranting that were nearly as offensive as the gibberish spewed by the Phelps. Still, this “debate” demonstrates one thing best of all: Sean Hannity doesn’t allow debates. He drones out the side he doesn’t agree with and pretends he is allowing a debate. He is an O’Reilly wannabe.

I’ve seen no record of the ACLJ defending any funeral protests of any kind. But you’re welcome to back your claim with some links proving your statement.

The provided audio allows anyone to decide for themselves. Given Hannity’s ratings versus those of talk you probably like at stations like Air America most of America has voted with their dials.

Hannity and the ACLJ stand for the truth and not the lies and sin of groups like the pro-gay lobby. We defeat you from state to shining state and will continue to do so.

A Bad Deal! Mike Gallagher Cuts Appeasement Deal With Shirley Phelps-Roper.

So yesterday I was listening to the Mike Gallagher Show and he had on the idiot in Christian’s clothing named Shirley Phelps-Roper. Of course you know I’ve spoken out against that band of idiots at the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka Ka…

You know, I wish you would not label all liberals like that. Actually, I like to think of myself as progressive and moderately liberal. I hope you do not honestly think that I believe this is acceptable behavior. No, I think it is the worst thing you can do is show up to a funeral of a dead soldier with signs regarding how “glad they are dead” and ramble on about homosexuality as if the dead soldier invented the word. I do believe in free speech and religious freedom, but often too many cult like “religions” use our rights as if it were their own personal ground to exert their rights while stomping on the rights of others.

There is one simple thing for these people to do, if you hate America so much because of our right to domestic tranquility, which is in the preamble, the maybe you should leave.

(Edited by IndependentConservative: Rant want various swearing removed. I want this person to be able to express their view, but I’m not allowing their various cursing portion of the rant.)

I think they should go to Jonestown where they can do their inbreeding correctly.

Hi, here’s proof that the ACLJ defended the right for people to picket at the funerals of homosexuals:

The ACLJ’s crocodile tears and faux outrage over the Snyder affair fails to convince me, because their record is deeply inconsistent. They only care about defending free speech when it’s speech that they personally approve of, especially if undesired demographic groups such as homosexuals are on the receiving end of the hatred.

On the other hand, the ACLU has a consistent record of defending all sorts of speech, even speech that mainstream liberals find odious. Whether you choose to deny it or not, the ACLU has defended Rush Limbaugh’s first amendment rights, as well as the right for Christian students to wear T-shirts with offensive messages in school, among other examples.

In the article you’ve cited, it says:

Sekulow said he strongly opposes anti-homosexual protests at funerals but contended they nonetheless are constitutionally protected free speech. “I don’t think that a speech-free zone [at a funeral] is any more constitutional than a buffer zone around an abortion clinic,” Sekulow said

It does NOT say the ACLJ DEFENDED THE RIGHT of the Westboro nuts, the ACLJ did NOT offer legal representation or counsel to Fred Phelps’ band of lunatics. Sekulow made it clear he does not promote such activity. He DID go inconsistent on his view of whether the buffer zone is constitutional, but we’re talking about matters with an 8 year gap. You would have to find that Jay Sekulow STILL approves of a buffer in one case and not another in 2 separate cases right now. It is possible his view on the matter has changed for any situation.

I don’t see a deep inconsistency, but likely a change of view on whether the buffer zone is constitutional. In all cases he’s made it clear he “strongly opposes” what the Phelps’ are doing across the board.

The ACLU, defends and covers, notice how they were soft on the Phelps’ and offering legal defense. It’s the ACLU that is trying to cover for garbage, Jay Sekulow said he strongly opposes it.
