Police Supervisor Overseeing Duke Lacrosse Rape Investigation and an Investigator on the Case Placed on Administrative Leave

by @ 12:18 am. Filed under Questionable Items

Sgt. Mark Gottlieb is the supervisor over the Duke lacrosse rape investigation being done by Durham police and Officer Richard Clayton is an investigator working under him on the case. Both, along with some other officers have been placed on administrative leave, for allegedly beating a restaurant employee while that person was on break behind the restaurant. They are accused of doing this the night before the stripper accuser in the Duke lacrosse case claimed she was raped.

Officers involved in probe placed on administrative duty

DURHAM — Multiple Durham Police officers — including one overseeing the Duke lacrosse rape investigation and one of his investigators — were placed on administrative duty Friday, after the Durham Police Department learned some of its officers were accused of involvement in an assault outside a Raleigh sports bar the night before.

Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael confirmed in an e-mail Sunday that Sgt. Mark Gottlieb and Officer Richard Clayton have been placed on administrative duty. She wrote that other officers were also placed on administrative duty, but declined to name those officers or say how many there were, citing personnel privacy laws.

In e-mails, Michael said she could not comment on the reassignments or their causes, again citing personnel privacy laws.

Gottlieb is the supervisor overseeing the police department’s investigation into an exotic dancer’s allegation that she was raped by Duke lacrosse players at a team party. Three players have been indicted; they have said they are innocent.

Gottlieb has been working for the Durham Police Department since 1982 and was promoted to sergeant in mid-2005.

Clayton works under Gottlieb and is also investigating the case.

The alleged assault occurred late Thursday night outside Blinco’s Sports Restaurant and Bar at 6711 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh Police said. The alleged victim, a 29-year-old employee of the restaurant, was on break behind the restaurant when the alleged assault occurred.

It has led to a criminal investigation by Raleigh police and an internal investigation by Durham police.

No charges have been filed in the case, Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said in an e-mail Sunday.

I think they meant to say “cases” where the article says “causes”.

This is just an interesting development. As readers of this blog already know, I feel the stripper accuser in the Duke lacrosse rape case is lying big time. So I feel all the continued “investigation” in this case is a waste of Durham taxpayer’s money, because the case should have been dropped already. Some say DA Mike Nifong is continuing the case because he might have some “bombshell” piece of evidence. I say he’s got a dud!
