Experimental Blood Substitute Polyheme Being Used in Hospitals Without Patient Consent

by @ 10:45 pm. Filed under Nuts on Parade

This is pretty shocking information. Hospitals should not be TESTING things on patients as part of a clinical trial without explicit consent. This needs more attention, so this means of “trial” is no longer used.

Artificial Blood Experiment: Is Your City Participating?

Hospitals in Twenty Cities Take Part in Polyheme Trials

Northfield Lab’s experimental blood substitute Polyheme is currently in randomized phase III clinical trials recruiting patients without informed consent all over the country. At one point, it was being tested in as many as 27 cities; it is still being tested in 23 hospitals in 20 cities.

There is a full list is at the link above and it’s going on in cities across the country. But the point should not be to simply inform people in those cities. This method of testing needs to stop. If a doctor can’t speak to the patient (or the patient’s family) ahead of time and give them (or family) time to decide, then the default option for that patient should always be NO.
