rightonpeachtree, you are Right On!

Guys like McGwire and Bonds were good without the dope, but their using the dope gave them longevity in the game and increased hitting power. This is why they broke records and were able to continue playing at a high level after injury.

I look at the leaders in most of today's sports with a suspect eye. I figure auto racing is probably the only one where the participants are not using dope. But of course we know they cheat by rigging their cars. NASCAR has tried to keep things under control, but it happens.

Sadly, I think this whole era has devalued most, if not all, baseball records. I just don't know if anyone is clean anymore (or at least if anyone was clean in the mid-to-late 90's).

Think back at some of the people who hit 50+ homers.

* Brady Anderson - a leadoff hitter whose highest total in any other year was 24.
* Luis Gonzalez - he hit 57 one year and didn't hit more than 31 in any other year.
* Sammy Sosa - he also puffed up physically and hit unthinkable numbers of homers.
* Mark McGwire - I seriously thought he was clean for the longest time. He hit 49 as a skinny rookie in 1987. I figured that he was legit even when hitting 60 or 70. However, his testimony before Congress and his admission on andro changed my opinion of him.
* Bonds - Jumped from 49 (his career high) in 2000 to 73 the next year. No question he was juicing.
* Palmeiro's career high was 47. Not unthinkable. However, he may have been a 20-30 HR guy who juiced and got to be a 30-40 HR guy.
* A-Rod - he hit 50 twice and in the 40's five other times. I would like to think he's clean, but who knows?
* Griffey - he hit 50 twice and in the 40's five other times. Again, I would like to think he's clean, but he has been hurt a lot (common with steroid freaks).

I'm sure other factors led to an overall increase in homers: Expansion, ball maybe strung more tightly, Colorado and Arizona air.

I'm with you, though. I hope they bring Bonds down. And I hope it happens before he approaches Hank Aaron. He did it the right way and his record deserves to remain unbesmirched. And they'll have to take Bonds out. He doesn't have enough respect for the game to bow out gracefully.
