Columbia, South Carolina’s WLTX-TV did a fantastic job of exposing former Lexington County (District Two) teacher Dr. Winston McCuen for the total White supremacist and racist that he is. He was last a Latin teacher in the school district and despite claims that he never brought his racist views into the classroom, some found that he actually did. Because when you feel one race of people is inferior, you don’t stop thinking that way once you show up for a job. If I honestly felt that Whites were inferior and I was teaching a class that was 95% Black and 5% White, do you honestly think I would never treat the Whites differently? If you feel the answer is “yes”, my bridge in Brooklyn is still for sale and I’m looking for a buyer if you’re interested.
As I have said many times before, I don’t feel people should be “fired” simply for being racist. (Truth be told, that would put a lot of Black teachers out of work too!) However, once someone has actually displayed their racist attitudes in the classroom, depending on their actions they should be fired. Especially if they’ve done it more than once. I believe that is the case with Dr. Winston McCuen. He admits that in the past he has brought some of his views into the classroom and some students claim they’ve witnessed him expressing some of his views and possibly treating Black students differently.
So no I don’t feel racists should be fired for what they say outside of work, but I do think they eventually expose themselves as racist on the job. Given the repeated offenses of Dr. Winston McCuen, I don’t think any public or private school in their right mind should ever hire this man again. He needs a career change. If he’s smart enough to attain a degree from Emory University in Atlanta, he should be able to make a living for himself in some other area. Outside of having influence over children.
I do feel that teachers should be expected to uphold some form of social standard, even in their personal life. If Dr. Winston McCuen was something like a leader of a KKK group I might understand firing him just for that. The Klan has a history of being a racist terrorist organization. So there are some cases where I could understand firing someone for their activities outside of work.
People like Dr. Winston McCuen, Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers, Alabama teacher Steve White and Colorado teacher Jay Bennish all bring more harm than good to the field of education.

Dr. Winston McCuen claims to identify with “classical Republican tradition”. He makes sure to toss out the word “republican” several times during the interview. And when the Republican party was first established, it was a party that endorsed slavery. That is until the Christians that really were trying to hold true to the Bible got in. And of course we know the Democratic Party is the party that literally fought to keep slavery.
Dr. McCuen has expressed his views on slavery in some online comments by saying the following. He was responding to a post at the site “American Renaissance” about issues within the NAACP.
As the great Calhoun taught: true freedom or liberty is a [Providential] reward for moral and intellectual virtue; while slavery, in most cases historically, is the just [Providential] punishment of the slave himself for his ignorance, sloth and depravity. Certainly, this was the case with black slavery in America ? since it unquestionably involved the just and proper subordination of an inferior and uncivilized [black] race by a superior and civilized [white] race.
That being the case, Vesey, Nat Turner, and the rest were at best only little more than a murderous, barbarous rebels against just authority and civilization.This is why there is no apology to be made for black slavery in America. Indeed, why should today?s whites apologize for the WISDOM of their ancestors?

These days it’s getting harder to find full blown racist like Dr. Winston McCuen. Interestingly enough, John C. Calhoun started out as a Republican and switched over to the Democratic party. He was very much a defender of slavery in America. And I’m sure if Dr. McCuen was asked if his views express hate, he’d say his views are part of America’s “heritage” not “hate”. Some don’t realize or attempt to cover-up when the “heritage” they choose to glorify is racist.
Even I take issue with groups like the NAACP and while they do have internal functional issues, there are other groups and even businesses run by Blacks that are doing great. For example, Kenneth Chenault has been CEO of American Express since 2001 and the company is doing well. And although I don’t like her political or spiritual views, Oprah Winfrey’s company Harpo Productions grew off the work of Black women.
Any man that feels America was at a “providential” high point when holding people in forced slavery is a very deranged individual.
update 5/16/2006 11:40PM: Correction regarding John C. Calhoun’s political affiliations. The “Republican Party” he was part of was the Democratic-Republicans, which became the slave endorsing Democratic party. This is the “republicanism” that racist like Winston McCuen identify with. This is not the same as the Republican party aka GOP formed in the 1850’s. Thanks to reader RhymesWithRight for the correction.

It seems pretty clear that you know NOTHING of the Republican Party, based upon what you have written here — nor of the Democrat Party.
You see, John Calhoun was dead and buried by the time the organization we know today as the Republican Party was formed in the mid-1850s.
Rather, he was ALWAYS a member of the same political party — one which was known by a number of different names over time, including the Democrat-Republicans. Within that party, which firmly supported slavery, were factions which variously and at diverse times called themselves Republicans, but which never ceased to be part of one and the same party — a party which began with Jefferson and which held power through the presidencies of James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson — whose vice president was none other than John C. Calhoun. That party eventually dropped all reference to fidelity to the republican notions found in the constitution, and formally adopted the name Democrat.
A full generation later, the modern Republican party — an anti-slavery party which has always remained true to its anti-racist roots — came into being. The bulk of that Republican party was drawn not from the Democrats, but rather from the party which opposed that powerful establishment — the Whigs, a party which could never get its act together because of the internal strife between its northern and southern factions. But as i noted, Calhoun was dead long before that landmark event in American political history occurred.

I would not go as far as to say I know “nothing” about the GOP, although you are correct regarding the historical associations. I have posted a correction.
I did error in the names because of the Democrat-Republicans often being called “Republicans” prior to some calling themselves Democrats and the formation of the GOP Republicans of the 1850s and today.
