Laura Ingraham and Father Robert Sirico Debunk The Da Vinci Code (Audio)

by @ 12:06 am. Filed under Audio, Evangelicals Under Attack, The Truth Shall Set you Free!

Hoax Code book Yesterday on the Laura Ingraham Show, she had on Father Robert Sirico, of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion & Liberty. They discussed The Da Vinci Code, Opus Dei, the Gnostic Gospel of Judas and other Gnostic Gospels.

The discussion covered how information in The Da Vinci Code is untrue. It also covered how the Catholic organization Opus Dei was misrepresented. Opus Dei even mentions the following on their web site about The Da Vinci Code. (Best read in full.)

The Da Vinci Code, the Catholic Church and Opus Dei

A response to The Da Vinci Code from the Prelature of Opus Dei in the United States.

Many people are intrigued by the claims about Christian history and theology presented in The Da Vinci Code. We would like to remind them that The Da Vinci Code is a work of fiction, and it is not a reliable source of information on these matters.

The Da Vinci Code has raised public interest in the origins of the Bible and of central Christian doctrines such as the divinity of Jesus Christ. These topics are important and valuable to study, and we hope that interested readers will be motivated to study some of the abundant scholarship on them that is available in the non-fiction section of the library.

Those who do further research and exercise critical judgment will discover that assertions made in The Da Vinci Code about Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene, and Church history lack support among reputable scholars. By way of example, The Da Vinci Code popularizes the idea that the fourth century Roman emperor Constantine invented the doctrine of the divinity of Christ for political reasons. The historical evidence, however, clearly shows that the New Testament and the very earliest Christian writings manifest Christian belief in the divinity of Christ.

We also want to point out that The Da Vinci Code?s depiction of Opus Dei is inaccurate, both in the overall impression and in many details, and it would be irresponsible to form any opinion of Opus Dei based on The Da Vinci Code.

One caller into the show was a Baptist, who like myself is not Catholic, but wants it to be known that twisted information like this is an affront to the Christian faith as a whole. Not just Catholics.

Father Sirico mentioned how the Gnostic Gospel of Judas is so far from the foundations of the Christian faith, that it was not even considered as much as other Gnostic Gospels. When church scholars determined the Gnostic Gospels were not true scripture. He also mentioned, that Leftists hoping to find some support for their causes in the Gnostic Gospels might end up disappointed. Although they are not true to the Christian faith, they don’t serve the Leftist’s agenda either.

Also Laura read a statement from Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze, who mentions that “other religions” would not take affronts to their faith with just talking. Let’s see if Dan Brown writes a Muhammad Code! We know what the blood thirsty Islamist did to the last maker of a film they took issue with.

Something I don’t understand is why anyone would read the Da Vinci code thiking it was anything other than fiction! I haven’t read it or seen the movie, but I might. It sounds like a good read and is kept in the fiction section of bookstores.

The book mentions some things are “fact”. See: http://www.danbrown.com/secrets/bizarre_facts/davinci_code.html

One key so called “fact” is the whole matter of the “Priory of Sion” which has been found to be bogus. Also the book mentions that the Opus Dei engage in “corporal mortification”, but the Opus Dei themselves say that is not true.
