With Porter Goss being forced out, the person who might be nominated for CIA Director is Gen. Michael Hayden. Conservatives like Michigan US House member Pete Hoekstra are speaking up in opposition to Hayden being nominated.
Given Goss was trying to make changes and was shown the door, I don’t expect anyone that would make major changes for the better to be nominated. With Hayden, there is the issue of him having a military background and taking over a job that has lots of civilian responsibilities. You can see the video of congressman Hoekstra giving his reasons for opposition at Expose the Left. Hot Air has a shorter clip and other details worth looking at.
John McCain is already leaning towards supporting Hayden. Which is an automatic red flag! Not that everything McCain does is wrong, but when Conservatives are upset Goss is out and also upset that Hayden might be in, you can tell that McCain was probably in favor of Goss leaving. Hayden supports certain waranteless wiretaps in times of war, so what Porter Goss never objected and there are plenty of others who would not object. The CIA needs someone who will make major reform. That’s what Goss was doing. Every pick coming from Negroponte is going to be something less. I think Hayden will do a good job at “following orders” and not make any more major reform. Not trying to knock anyone out there in the military, but I’m saying Hayden is being picked to be a “yes man” and not someone to root out leakers or shake things up to remove inefficiency.
