A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats. Minorities With Business Sense are Growing the Ranks of Entrepreneurs.

by @ 3:21 pm. Filed under Business

Back in July of 2005 the U.S. Census Bureau released a report showing that between 1997 and 2002 minority business ownership was increasing and earning more. They (or maybe I should say “we”) are increasing above the national average. Hey, can White guys claim they are being “discriminated” against now and pull some Affirmative Action moves? The race hustlers always use the “unequal results” litmus test and that is how many government race based programs define who should get a handout.

Minority Groups Increasing Business Ownership at Higher Rate than National Average, Census Bureau Reports

The nation?s 23 million businesses increased their receipts by 22 percent between 1997 and 2002 to reach $22.6 trillion. Increases in receipts ranged from a high of 30 percent for black-owned firms to 5 percent for businesses owned by whites.

I think it’s good Blacks with some business sense are doing so well. We know that Blacks who make the wrong choices are not doing so well and race-baiters will ensure you think they are the only Blacks in existence, while they try and line their own pockets. We know the Blacks in areas not doing so well are the ones with the highest rates of abortion. Abortion kills, but it does not help. Also, Blacks not doing so well are suffering the effects of illegal immigration costing them job opportunities. I saw a pro-illegal farm owner on TV claiming that he could not get Americans to do work for $20 an hour. He’s either lying or did not take a look in the hood. Because for $20 an hour you could clear a few ghetto street corners of low-end drug dealers really quick. Because many of them are making far less than $30K a year and risking their lives to do it.

So Blacks are doing well, it looks like Whites are taking a bit of a decline and this proves that equal opportunity never means equal results. I like Ward Connerly’s idea of not tracking everything based on race, but the numbers are always interesting.

The Census Bureau has updated the minority sections of their report with more details just released today. This has led to various local news reports in areas like Pittsburgh, Georgia and California.

Will there be any marches led by the race warlords to celebrate this news? Don’t hold your breath! But some folks are beaming over the news.

Black-Owned Businesses Grow at High Rate

“I’m proud,” said Harry Alford, president and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. “We’re the fastest-growing segment.”

Does this mean that since Whites are slowing down, that we Blacks will advocate the opening of a White Chamber of Commerce? Hey I just think it’s a fair question. I mean if you want to play on race, you should not stop with your own. Or is the idea to see “Whitey” do bad? I just can’t help but wonder. We know Whites will be the racial minority in the not so distant future. Will all the folks that press for minority empowerment now do anything to help America’s future minority? I mean we do want to see minorities succeed right? If I’m alive in 2075 and celebrate Whites having an uptick in business growth (if it happens) will I be called an old sellout for celebrating what will then be a minority group doing well?

That same news report does have a bit of a fuzzy math moment where it mentions Blacks are graduating from school at a rate of 72%.

Blacks as a group still trail whites in education and income, but they have made gains in the past half-century. In 1950, only 14 percent of black adults had high school diplomas, compared with 36 percent of whites, according to the Census Bureau. The gap narrowed by 2000, when 72 percent of black adults had at least a high school diploma, compared with 84 percent of whites.

“We’ve got the first generation of significantly educated people,” Alford said. “There’s a black middle class like never before.”

Because other findings show a much different result.

From Star Parker Commentary: We need to open the education marketplace

According to a study recently released by the Civil Rights Project at Harvard University, high-school graduation rates in California are almost 20 percent less than those officially reported by the California Department of Education.

While the state data show 87 percent of high-school students graduating in 2002, the Harvard study says the graduation rate was 71 percent.

More shocking is the snapshot the study provides of minority graduation rates. Statewide, 57 percent of blacks and 60 percent of Latinos graduate from high school. In the Los Angeles Unified School District, 39 percent of Latinos and 47 percent of blacks graduate.

The California Department of Education does not appear to be challenging the data that Harvard is reporting. The state’s data seem to ignore the fact that many kids simply drop out of school, generally between the ninth and 10th grades. These dropouts often get conveniently reported by schools simply as transfers.

I’ve seen similar numbers in other state results. So if various state numbers are showing numbers closer to 50% when taking an honest account of kids who drop out why do some government reports show higher values?

Some non-government reports show what me and Ms. Parker have noted.

Manhattan Institute Report: High School Graduation Rates in the United States

The national graduation rate for the class of 1998 was 71%. For white students the rate was 78%, while it was 56% for African-American students and 54% for Latino students.

It all depends on how you define the words “graduate” and “drop out”. This is what the US Department of Education has to say.

High School Dropout Rates

Who Is Counted as a Dropout?

Gaustad (1991) reports that the definition of a dropout varies widely, with different states, districts, and even schools within districts using the term differently. For example, some districts may not include students who drop out over the summer, or who leave school to get married, while others do include them in the dropout total. In addition, some districts may keep more complete records than others. For example, some districts follow up on students who do not return after the summer to determine whether or not they are enrolled in other schools, while other districts do not. Other variations may include whether or not certain types of non-traditional students (i.e., those who leave regular high school before graduation to enter correctional institutions, enroll in GED programs, or enter college) are counted as dropouts until they have completed an equivalency program (McMillen et. al., 1994).

Confused? Maybe that’s the goal. Areas reporting to government don’t want to look bad. But other independent reads of the data show what is probably a more honest picture.

So are Blacks doing better or worse? I think both! Blacks with the sense to do better are doing so. Blacks caught up in the gangsta rap, crap culture and left to compete with illegal aliens make up a large number of people and are doing worse.

Would I have pulled all this data if it did not relate to Black people? Probably not, but hey at least I’m being honest. I acknowledge I have a level of inherent bias when it comes to my areas of focus in terms of research. But I’m not like some who wish to try and force a race-based result via government mandate. And the continual production of race-based data only causes people to continue thinking in terms of race.

Fire & Hammer has some good related commentary regarding minorities and education.
