Bodies in Zimbabwe Sewers and “Genocide” Continues in Darfur

by @ 11:02 pm. Filed under Nuts on Parade

Baby killing is on the rise in Zimbabwe.

Bodies of fetuses, newborns clog Harare’s sewers

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — The corpses of at least 20 newborn babies and fetuses are found each week in the sewers of Zimbabwe’s capital, some having been flushed down toilets, Harare city authorities said, according to state media Friday.

Acute shortages of revenue and gasoline in the nation’s worst economic crisis since independence in 1980 have crippled public utilities and garbage collection services across Zimbabwe.

Hospital fees and charges for scarce medicines have soared. Church and charity groups blame economic hardships for an increase in illegal back-street abortions.

And while this goes on Mugabe sends mixed signals. On one hand he’s still on a get rid of Whitey spree. And on the other he claims he wants to mend relations with Britain. Of course he could just work with the productive farmers to provide food and maybe that would cause Britain to be more receptive, but we are talking about Mugabe.

Rice says “genocide”

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says that “genocide” continues in Darfur.

?Genocide? continues in Darfur - Rice

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Thursday “genocide” was continuing in Sudan?s Darfur region, but moves to bolster security with a UN force were held up pending a request from the African Union.

Rice said she was “very concerned” about the situation in Darfur, where up to 300,000 people have died in three years of fighting pitting government forces and their militia allies against local rebels.

“On Darfur, our policy is unchanged. It is our view that genocide was committed and in fact continues in Darfur,” Rice said in testimony before the House International Relations Committee.

Her comments appeared to be a new US turn on whether Khartoum was guilty of genocide, a legal term that could trigger obligations under international conventions, including the possible use of force to stop it.

Rice?s predecessor Colin Powell accused Sudan?s government of genocide in September 2004. But two weeks ago, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer backed away from the designation.

Frazer told reporters the current situation in Darfur “is very different than it was. It?s not as systematic. … It?s a series of small attacks and incidents.”

Does the African Union want more help in dealing with the crisis in the Sudan? If so, it’s time they make their request known. Rice and former Secretary of State Powell have been much more vocal than their predecessor Madeline Halfbright Albright, when it comes to issues of genocide in Africa. And the Bush Administration has shown more of a willingness to help stop genocide in parts of Africa than the previous (Clinton) Administration. (But remember folks, Clinton is the one hailed as the first “Black” President  .)
