AIDS Myths

by @ 1:14 pm. Filed under Junk Science

In my rant about our President’s State of the Union Address, there is one thing that I said nothing about. Because discussing it requires a totally separate post. Hence the reason for this post. Because our President and probably most of you reading this have bought into the hype that we need to toss more money at AIDS research and prevention. While I agree that HIV/AIDS is a terrible disease, we should work to fight it and people should be educated about it, I must explain why I feel it gets far more attention than it rightfully should. I should also mention, that I know people who died from AIDS, one being a member of my family.

To be frank there is a lobby of Liberals, who are often gay or supporters of anything a gay group proposes, that push the issue of AIDS over and above any other medical issue known to man. I feel this is because some members of that group fear their sinful actions might kill them. Because we all know people who live by the so-called “Right Winged Christian Morals” are not seeing much of a problem with AIDS. Sure sinful activity like gluttony leads to health problems too, but the lobby for AIDS is comprised of an interesting group of people, who often reject Christian theology as it is accepted by most of society. Because they know that the generally accepted view of Christian theology rejects their lifestyle. Many gluttons are able to live with the fact their gluttony is not accepted in Christian teachings, but gays on the other hand wish to have acceptance of their lifestyle treated as more than just a non-sin. They wish to have their activity “blessed” as a sacrament of marriage.

So let’s start this little journey with words from our President’s recent State of the Union Address.

From the 2006 State of the Union Address

A hopeful society acts boldly to fight diseases like HIV/AIDS, which can be prevented, and treated, and defeated. More than a million Americans live with HIV, and half of all AIDS cases occur among African Americans. I ask Congress to reform and reauthorize the Ryan White Act, and provide new funding to states, so we end the waiting lists for AIDS medicines in America. (Applause.) We will also lead a nationwide effort, working closely with African American churches and faith-based groups, to deliver rapid HIV tests to millions, end the stigma of AIDS, and come closer to the day when there are no new infections in America. (Applause.)

Presidents continue to press for renewal of the Ryan White Act, to give special funding to people affected by AIDS. Since the introduction of this act billions of tax payer dollars have been devoted to this cause. And since gay groups have hooked up with so-called Black leaders, things now include racial twist. Given Blacks have been affected by AIDS at a higher rate than other races of people. This union of Blacks and gays disables any criticism of their efforts as bigoted and racist. Something Republicans wish to avoid. So Republicans today roll over and acquiesce to the wishes of these lobbying groups.

AIDS Funding in America

AIDS is not the biggest killer in America. Not the biggest killer of any race of people in America. Will never be the biggest killer in America. Is not even the 2nd or 3rd biggest killer in America, but it gets far more funding, while other bigger killers in America are left with far less. (Although abortion [baby killing] is the true #1 killer I will not cover that in this post.)

In 1998 it was announced that AIDS was no longer one of the top 10 killers in America. For Blacks in America AIDS has been the #4 killer. The bottom line is that culture is the reason for the discrepancy. But for all Americans the top killers are heart disease and cancer. So one would think that the biggest killers would be getting the most funding for research and educating the public. WRONG!

Politics Drives Funding of AIDS Research

In terms of numbers of people in the U.S. who die due to various diseases, figures from 2001 show heart disease (700,142), cancer (553,768), and stroke (163,538) topping the list. HIV/AIDS, which is ranked 22nd on the list of causes of death, killed 14,175 people in 2001.

However, when CDC funding in 2001 is examined, HIV/AIDS tops the list by far with $854.06 million. Funding for diseases like heart disease, cancer and stroke lag far behind.

NIH spending also seems out of whack. Based on 2003 budget figures, that agency allocated roughly $194,000 per death caused by HIV/AIDS. For heart disease research, the NIH spent approximately $2,871 per death.

You can also read more about this at The FAIR Foundation.

While I may have known people who died with AIDS, I know far more people who died from the other medical issues mentioned above. Being a Black man, it would better serve my family if more was done to prevent things other than AIDS. Because AIDS is the least of our medical problems. The medical problems outside of AIDS are also issues of culture, but they are the real major killers of all Americans, not AIDS.

AIDS, Africa and Fuzzy Math

This write-up offers the best summary of how much of the data being used to calculate the effect of AIDS in Africa is bogus. Such write-ups have been met with scorn from the usual suspects. But they still use their same bogus data for the basis of their arguments against reports that AIDS will not kill as many people in Africa as they claim. In the past our President has also devoted lots of money to fighting AIDS in Africa. The true major killer in Africa is malaria, but the best option for fighting it continues to be ignored.

The Evangelical Outpost has more about the bogus African AIDS math.

Conclusion

While these games are played, to imply that much more money should go to AIDS research and prevention, the true killers of people around the world are getting much less. For even a portion of the amount spent on AIDS, far more people across the globe could be saved from the real major killers in the world. It is time to be honest about what is really killing people and spend accordingly.
