Children Who Don’t Buy Into Racial Stereotypes Do Great Things

K Arnold Meet Kayla Arnold, winner of Gwinnett County Georgia’s countywide spelling bee. She is in the 8th grade at Snellville Middle School.

“I really don’t know what to do with my hands right now,” she said after her win. “I was nervous, but my dad and step-mom reassured me that I was going to win, going to make it.”
Qualita Arnold said Kayla hadn’t been spelling with her homework every night, but that she was a voracious reader. Kayla’s advice to aspiring spellers: study, read, sound out your words, and don’t mix up an f with a ph.
Kayla kept the audience in suspense when she spelled immunologic correctly, only to add an additional “al” at the end of the word. She and second-place finisher Tucker Fleming dueled for about 15 minutes, one of the longest head-to-head spelling competitions that caller Scott Slade said he had seen during a decade of calling bees.

The oral bee was not nearly as nerve-wracking as the written spelling test the county used to whittle a group of 31 spellers down to the top 11 finishers had been, he said. In the first part, spellers sat in the theater at Mill Creek High School two seats apart, silently writing more than 75 words from the 2006 list.

You don’t achieve this level of greatness by listening to classmates, that claim to do well in school means you are “acting White“. And you don’t win this award via an Affirmative Action program. The finalists in this competition varied in skin tone and as Kayla mentioned, they all got there first and foremost because they studied.

I say congratulations to you Ms. Arnold! Like me, you will encounter idiots in your lifetime, that want to claim you are not “authentically Black” because of your hard work. But please do like me and ignore them. You will see that your hard work pays off in the end and they will go on to live the life of a loser. (I was no spelling champ, not even close, but even my desire to try and do my school work earned me some pretty insane comments from classmates.)

I’m sure Kayla is not watching BET’s “Beef” series today, as she prepares to qualify for the state competition in March. But for all you losers in life, right now BET is airing some of the greatest Hip Hop “Beefs” of all time for your “Black entertainment”.
