Random Thoughts on Martin Luther King Jr. and The MLK Holiday
- Martin Luther King Jr. was a Christian minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, trying to do as best he could. As he said himself “I just want to do God’s will”. It is sad to see Leftist Atheists try and run with his name.
- Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, it is sad to see some people don’t have a dream for themselves.
- Even after Democrats (John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy) helped Martin Luther King Jr. get out of jail in Georgia, he remained non-partisan. This offered his voice great political leverage. It is sad to see some are so easy to endorse a party today. Also, if Nixon had made the call to try and free him, would more Blacks blindly follow Republicans? I suggest you read this chapter from his autobiography in full. (Of course it would have been unprecedented for a VP to make the call in a situation like that, but it probably was unprecedented for a Senator to do the same. MLK Jr. realized there was a potential to leverage the call for Black votes.)
There were several points in American history that started Black voters moving into the Democratic party’s camp and this was the tipping point.
- I wonder if Bobby Kennedy considered asking for court approval before authorizing wiretaps on Martin Luther King Jr.? And if Bobby Kennedy became such a friend to King before his death, how come he never sought to remove the wiretaps and never made it public? Seems a “changed man” who was not another political opportunist would have.
- Some people complain and say that “MLK-Day is the only US Holiday honoring an individual”. This is not true. How come they forget Columbus Day? (And for the record I liked when Washington and Lincoln each had a separate holiday, instead of “President’s Day”.)
- Being a Christian minister, Martin Luther King Jr. tried to keep any sin he may have had in his life out of the public eye and never endorsed activity that would be seen as being sinful. Why do some people feel he would endorse things like gay marriage today? Even if he ever had a gay relationship (Adam Clayton Powell once threatened to claim he had one with Bayard Rustin) he was never one to endorse the lifestyle. We know for a fact that he smoked cigarettes, but he never did an endorsement for Phillip Morris.
- Yet another book has been released, that claims Martin Luther King Jr. accused Jesse Jackson of using the Civil Rights Movement for his own self promotion. I wonder what he’d have to say about Al Sharpton?
- The Far-Left embraces Martin Luther King Jr. for his anti-war stance. At the same time they run away from the Pope, who also is against all war. Could it be the fact that there is a Pope alive to speak for himself, that goes against much of the rest of the Left’s agenda? I think so.
- Even during the Vietnam War, that Martin Luther King Jr. disagreed with, he never called the President a terrorist. He had a way of avoiding personal attacks against the office of the President, that we all could learn from.
- At times Martin Luther King Jr. would disagree with the President in office, but never did he leave America to visit people that are like Hugo Chavez.
- Some Conservatives refuse to celebrate the MLK Holiday, because it is embraced by the political Left. The political Left likes New Years Day too, but that does not stop Conservatives for celebrating it. Conservative Republican Ronald Reagan didn’t have a problem with helping to make it a national holiday.
- Some people call MLK-Day a “Black Holiday”. I’m sorry, but you must be confusing MLK-Day with Kwanzaa. Nobody ever calls Columbus Day an Italian Holiday, but everyone understands he had an impact on America. Like Columbus Day, MLK-Day is an American Holiday.
- Martin Luther King Jr. avoided having much interaction with Nation of Islam leaders, but recently BET.com had an online vote for their 2005 Person of the Year and the current Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan won. Given the victims of Hurricane Katrina were also on the ballot, I don’t have a hard time wondering who MLK Jr. probably would have voted for.
- I wonder how Martin Luther King Jr. would feel about Affirmative Action? And if he agreed with it, would he thank Republican President Richard Nixon for being the first President to actually use it, to combat Union racism? And even if he supported how Nixon used it, I wonder if he would support how it is used today in cases where no actual proof of racial bias in hiring was found?
Would Nixon’s use of Affirmative Action cause MLK Jr. to feel that Richard Nixon also grew in office like he felt of John F. Kennedy?
- I’ve never seen a mention of Martin Luther King Jr. calling anyone a “sellout”, “House Slave” or “Uncle Tom”. Although plenty of Black Radicals said that of him. It’s interesting how those words are used today towards Black Conservatives.
