An assorted group of fruits and nuts visits Venezuela

by @ 1:09 am. Filed under Nuts on Parade, Terrorism and War

What happens when you mix Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover, Cornell West, Tavis Smiley and some lesser known nuts with Hugo Chavez? You get one very nutty fruit bowl.

On January 7, 2006 Harry Belafonte led a “delegation” of 13 other ACTORvists on a visit to Venezuela. They claim they were going to review how Hugo’s (socialist heading towards communist) efforts were going. And they are planning to bring what they learned from Hugo back to the USA. They want to try and inspire Americans to embrace the programs used by Hugo and also play him up as a hero. You can read all about that in this article. That article is from a Venezuelan news source. Reading it you would think that Chavez was a hero and that all the talk against him is just American media spin. I’ll speak about that a little later in this post.

This article mentions some of the more inflammatory statements made by Harry Belafonte, that are already getting plenty of coverage. Calling Bush a terrorist and stuff. Given that is getting much coverage elsewhere I won’t bother with that here. Because while everyone is attacking Belafonte, they are missing the other members of the “delegation”. Those 13 other folks are the ones that will really be pushing to bring Chavez’s programs to the USA. You should be aware of who they are, so you can see their moves coming. Here are the names of the folks that went that I could gather:

While delegation members praised Chavez, there were some matters that they totally ignored. While they spoke with some of Chavez’s opposition, there is no record of the “delegation” giving their complaints much attention. For example, there have been plenty of complaints about the elections in Venezuela. While many of these delegation members complain about things like that here, they seem to say nothing about the situation in Venezuela. See the WSJ.com article: Chavez’s Rivals Are Withdrawing From Elections (WSJ.com paid subscription required). In addition to detailing some election issues, the article also mentions Chavez has tightened controls on the media, cut some of the power of Venezuela’s Congress, is watering down the definition of private property and trying to remove term limits. Can you say the makings of a communist dictatorship? That’s what he’s trying to make, just like his friend Fidel Castro. Hugo has also been critical of church ministers in Venezuela. And there are claims that he may have authorized attacks against them.

U.S. Department of State - Venezuela

In May, Archbishop of Merida, Baltazar E. Porras, accused the Government of seeking to destroy the Catholic Church’s credibility by manufacturing scandals aimed at priests and bishops. He described a series of attacks on churches, cathedrals, and priests’ houses, whose apparent aim was to create fear, rather than steal objects of value. Prior to at least one attack, normal police presence had been withdrawn after authorities allegedly claimed it was a privilege the CatholicChurch should not enjoy. The Archbishop believes the Government wishes to diminish the Church or any institution that the Government perceives as a competitor.

In a speech in June to the Organization of American States General Assembly, Foreign Minister Roy Chaderton, linked Christianity with ethnic persecution, slavery, and mass murder.

And now that the price of oil has gone up, Hugo took all the privately owned oil fields. I never by gas from Venezuela’s American affiliate Citgo! Yea there is plenty of dirty oil, but at least with other gas companies more of the money goes to a business based in the USA.

About CITGO

The company is owned by PDV America, Inc., an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A., the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Also it seems that Hugo is playing some funny games with his country’s high poverty rate statistics.

A miracle! Venezuela’s poverty has suddenly fallen

How interesting! Just a few months after Venezuela’s official statistics institute reported that poverty had increased by 11 percent since President Hugo Chávez took office in 1999, the same institution is now reporting — after a public scolding by the president — that poverty has suddenly plummeted to pre-1999 levels.

”This is very suspicious,” says Luis Pedro España, an economist who heads a poverty studies project at Venezuela’s Andrés Bello Catholic University. “If they had indeed reduced extreme poverty by more than half in a few months, it would be a world record.”

My conclusion: If Venezuela’s INE is right, and wants to maintain its reputation of unbiased economic reporting, it should accept some adult supervision and open its books to independent economists, like most governments do.

Trying to make it seem his programs are working, when they really are not! And the “delegation” wants to come back to the USA and claim that they saw Venezuela and things were going great  .

The Venezuelan officials that changed their numbers claim that things improved because of an improved GDP. But as this WSJ.com article points out, Hugo’s efforts are causing investors to lighten up on their investments and GDP is being impacted.

All that and I still have not mentioned many of the other issues with Hugo Chavez:

Comandante Chavez’s Friends

A day after the September 11 terrorist attacks, President Chavez declared that “The United States brought the attacks upon itself, for their arrogant imperialist foreign policy.” Chavez also described the U.S. military response to bin Laden as “terrorism,” claiming that he saw no difference between the invasion of Afghanistan and the September 11 terrorist attacks.

While the United States considers Saddam Hussein a threat to world peace, Chavez has hailed Saddam as his “brother” and business “partner.” In the past two years Chavez has continued to cultivate relationships with the governments listed in the State Department’s roll of state sponsors of terrorism–he has been particularly vocal in his support for the Iranian regime.

Last December a high-level Venezuelan military defector gave sworn testimony that terrorist links exist between al Qaeda and the Chavez government. The defector, President Chavez’s personal pilot, alleges that one operation involved the transfer of close to $1 million in cash to Osama bin Laden.

So any delegation that claims Hugo is a good man has to be full of nuts!

update (1/9/2006 3:18PM ET):
Hugo Chavez is now telling coffee producers in his country that they better sell coffee at government mandated prices, or he will take over their business!

Chavez has warning for coffee producers

Producers “are hoarding coffee, waiting for me to raise the official price, but I won’t raise it,” said Chavez

“If they don’t want to roast the coffee in the roasting facilities they have, we will take the roasters … we will nationalize them.”

Price controls and more government control of businesses. History proven signs of a nation that is going to go down hard!

Harry Belafonte: The Mike Farrell of Calypso

    I learned two things today.
    1. Harry Belafonte is still alive. Good for him. Somehow didn’t know that and missed out when he was calling Powell and Rice “house slaves” a few years ago. Classy. Ever since Carson went off of the ai…

You are not being fair D.

Danny Glover and Tavis only seek to have more people around the world to have access to the millions of dollars that they have. They support the “liberation” as a means of making this happen.

Cornell West was just homesick. He misses his big house in the White suburbs even though he told Blacks in “Race Matters” to stop being materialistic and that we should live in Black neighborhoods.

Michael Savage Rips Hugo Chavez and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Promotes Boycott of Citgo! (Audio)

Well I already told you that I never buy from Citgo! And now Dr. Michael Savage is saying that nobody should. Of course I’m in full agreement, given I personally boycotted them since hearing the mouth of Hugo Chavez.
