Donovan McNabb thought the NAACP supported Black people, HA!

by @ 12:11 am. Filed under Sports

Now that the president of the Philadelphia branch of the NAACP has made some outrageous claims about him, Eagles QB Donovan McNabb has 2nd thoughts about the NAACP. And he should! No organization that really cares about Black people would support the Federal Government forcing states to allow people to kill babies in the womb. Especially when a higher percentage of them are Black! And they would not support sparing the life of someone who started a street gang that still ravages Black communities, as they did with Tookie Williams. The NAACP spares the convicted, while allowing the innocent to be damned. Much like when Jesus was on the cross, the crowd was allowed to grant freedom to one man and they shouted to free Barabbas (the guilty man), while asking for Jesus to be crucified. But I guess Donavan did not figure out that the NAACP really is not working in a direction that helps Black people, until one of their leaders attacked him personally.

This whole spat between Mr. McNabb and the NAACP began when NAACP Philadelphia branch President J. Whyatt Mondesire, who is also publisher of the Philadelphia Sunday Sun wrote this column that included the following:

Well….well…I’ve seen you Donovan E. McNabb–in your formative years as well as your mid-career development–and one thing is certain. Donovan E. McNabb you’re no Doug Williams.

However, this week I felt compelled to offer some personal thoughts about your horrific on-field performances this season because at their core there is a lie you have tried to use to hide the fact that in reality you actually are not that good. In essence Donny, you are mediocre at best.

We celebrated the boss’s giving you that huge lifetime salary deal which meant we’d have you around until it was time for you to join the other retired stars in television’s broadcast booth.
But then you played the race card and practically all of us fell for your hustle.

Just think how the whole media circus could have been avoided had you had the courage to offer only a tiny fraction of your bonus this year to Owens and running back, Brian Westbrook.

Basically this nut-case Mondesire is claiming, that because McNabb mentioned there is an expectation that Black QBs run the ball, he was playing a race card. Mondesire also feels that McNabb is not a great QB on or off the field and that he should have given NFL King of Jackasses Terrell Owens some of his money.

Well first I must say that McNabb has already proven he is a superb QB. Which is why he was given that lifetime salary deal. Nobody puts big money on the line for a sorry player. Like Hush Rush Limbaugh, Mr. Mondesire is totally wrong about McNabb. Mondesire has only proven himself to be the typical finicky Philadelphia sports fan. When their player is healthy and doing well they praise him and when he is hurt and not playing as well they trash him worst than fans of other teams. (And I lived in the Philedelphia-metro area for a few years, so I know I’m telling the truth.) McNabb’s claims about what is usually “expected” out of Black QBs has foundation in fact. Many Black college QBs never played the position in the NFL, because they were moved to other positions where their speed was leveraged and most who continue in the QB role are assumed to be able to run better than non-Black QBs. Regardless, McNabb is a great QB that can run and pass well. And when he is hurt, then he’s not the same. But being injured does not make one mediocre, it makes them what they are which is injured. We do not call Michael Jordan mediocre at best because of how he plays now that he is older. We call him great, because of his play at his peak! Dominique Wilkins never won a championship with the Atlanta Hawks, but we don’t deny his greatness as a NBA player. And for anyone to suggest that any player give a dime of their paycheck to Terrell Owens is simply insane.

Mondesire also mentioned Doug Williams. But lets be honest, Doug Williams was in the right place at the right time. McNabb has seen far more Pro-Bowls than Doug Williams, because McNabb is simply a superior player. And true McNabb has not seen racism like some Black players of decades ago, but that does not mean Mr. McNabb cannot address racial attacks he faces today.

So McNabb responded to this foolishness and mentioned:

I always thought the NAACP supported African Americans and didn’t talk bad about them. Now you learn a little bit more.

Yes you do Mr. McNabb, indeed you do!

Mondesire says he was speaking only for himself, not on behalf of the NAACP and maintains his position on McNabb. Well no chain in stronger than it’s weakest link. And regardless of who Mondesire was speaking for, his race laden attack on McNabb is a dishonor to the legacy of a once great organization.

The NAACP attacked Rush Limbaugh when he made similar comments. Now just what will they do, now that one of their own is taking a very similar line of attack? Rush said WAY LESS than Mr. Mondesire’s long race based attack against McNabb. It would only be right for the NAACP to remove Mr. Mondesire from his post. Given their attacks against Rush Limbaugh, they should also push to have Mondesire removed from anything he does in life. That is, unless the NAACP does not treat all attacks against Blacks the same. And given their current track record, don’t hold your breath waiting for them to remove Mondesire. Although it would show they have an ounce of consistency if they do!

update (12/16/2005 5:29PM ET):
NAACP President Bruce Gordon has come out against the comments of J. Whyatt Mondesire. He has not said a word about removing Mr. Mondesire! Nice try Mr. Gordon, but you’re not fooling anyone. Just a public apology is not good enough. Your organization launched a furious attack when Rush Limbaugh made comments about McNabb. Now it’s time you do the same with Mr. Mondesire.

You want to see the NAACP get it wrong when it really counts, read my blawg entries from 18 June, 13 December and today, 16 December.

I was their legal redress chair in Nashua, NH until they got scared of The Man and threw me under the bus.

Don’t forget to grab some popcorn and watch the movies over at the website, http://www.christopherkingesq.com.

I have not spoken with my cousin (Wilbon) about this yet; but I’m sure it will be an interesting discussion.

    Peace.
