Many Katrina “racism” hearing witnesses are long time Leftist

by @ 2:28 am. Filed under Nuts on Parade

At the Congressional hearing demanded by Georgia Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, there were several cries of “racism”. And several of those “witnesses” have a long history of Leftist activity. No wonder they complained most about “Bush”!

The hearings were supposed to review the Federal response to hurricane Katrina and ended up being a race card tossing, Bush bashing mess! But as I’ve pointed out in this prior post, it was to be expected considering some of the participants.

Now I’ve found out some background information on the so-called “witnesses”. 5 Black evacuees testified. I have found information that proves 3 of them are long time Leftist. Only 1 of those 5 said that he felt the response was not rooted in racism. So basically McKinney forced a hearing with a very stacked deck of Bush haters and people that would basically parrot her ilk!

NewsBusters discovered that witness Doreen Keeler is an abortion advocate who fought against Louisiana having “Choose Life” license plates. They also found that witness Leah Hodges was a member of the Black Panther party in the 1960’s and stood trial for the attempted murder of five policemen! She was the lead defendant and acquitted.

This led me to wonder about the most brash member of the “witnesses”, Dyan French Cole aka Mama D. I discovered that she has a long history of crying racism and mouthing off to public officials in a disorderly manner.

First have a look at this article from June of last year. Where state legislators wanted to help failing schools, by taking some power away from the Orleans parish school board and giving it to the Superintendent. Given the condition of their schools you would think that a new approach would be welcomed! A Black legislator initiated the legislation and it was supported by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco. Well of course the school board was mad and some like Mama D cried racism, because they wanted their majority Black School Board to make the decisions regarding failing schools. The Superintendent Anthony Amato is not Black and the school board attempted to remove him while he was away on vacation! This turned into a heated battle and a judge had to cite the Brown vs. Board of Education case in defense of the Superintendent. Have a look at some of these outbursts that included Mama D.

Tiffany LeCesne, a teacher at Lusher Extension, stressed Amato’s work in making professional development available for teachers. But her comments were drowned out by Dyan French Cole, a longtime activist and former NAACP leader. Standing with one colleague by her side, French Cole challenged the crowd as if she were a crowd herself, her voice rising to a booming alto.

“Racism is still rampant!” French Cole screamed, her face a scant few inches from the face of parent Lynn Squire, who tried to argue back.

“This is not about race,” Kim Dolliolle, shaking with rage, yelled at French Cole as the cameras converged.

Away from the crowd, French Cole spoke measuredly but fiercely, stressing that what was happening wasn’t about Amato. Instead, she said, it was about interfering with the civil rights of the voters who had put the school board members into office. “The school board members should’ve been able to go in there and do what they needed to do,” said French Cole. The people outside the building weren’t there for the poor, black children who made up the vast majority of the systems’ students, she said.

“We want Amato!” the chant began again, haltingly.

“You can have him!” French Cole called. “Take him home with you.”

Amato is still in his position and the legislation passed. Funny how Mama D fails to acknowledge the right of the elected House members to make legislation to try and help failing schools, when the local school board has not done an adequate job.

One letter to the editor of that newspaper said it best:

Race Not the Issue

I wish that people like Dyan French Cole (‘Board and Circuses,’ June 15) and the various school board members that believe that a black superintendent of schools would save this school district would wake up and face reality. Superintendent Anthony Amato’s race does not have any bearing on improving the education of this city’s children. We have had many black superintendents before (Morris Holmes, Al Davis, Everett Williams, to name a few), and none of them were able to turn this district around.

I find it appalling and an embarrassment as a black man and educator in this school district that board members are so bent on racism. If this school district were 90 percent white and we had white school board members saying that we needed a white superintendent to best educate our children, the NAACP, National Urban League and ACLU would all stand up and scream racism.

Also Mama D is a member of a group that works to “improve conditions inside the prisons”, youth prisons in particular. Here on their web site, you can see a picture of Mama D trying to tell FEMA workers where to place trash. And you can read more about the group she’s now a member of here.

Looks to me like Mama D is getting in the way and many attempts have been made to get her to leave, but she won’t go! Before hurricane Katrina hit, she refused to leave.

New Orleans’ holdouts have no regrets

Her neighbors needed her, she says. Her home became a revolving door of diabetics, people on dialysis, an elderly man with a pacemaker and others. She sanitized everyone on her front porch before letting them in. In the first couple of days, all they got were “hard rock” Horehound candies dropped from a Red Cross plane.

But Mama D says the police and U.S. marshals still harassed her and her soul patrol, accusing them of looting and telling them to get out of the city.

“Why would you not want me here?” she wonders. As a longtime sanitation worker and community activist, Mama D (her legal name is Dyan French Cole) believes she can play a part in putting New Orleans back together.

She also refused to leave when hurricane Rita was bearing down on the region.

DAVID MATTINGLY, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): With the possibility of another disaster looming, Dyan French Cole is doing more than just staying put. She is readying her own relief efforts.

Now some might think it is great that she stayed and helped so many people. But what if she encouraged people to leave and had left herself? It would have prevented some people from dying in the storm and made life easier for rescue workers! If more known people in those communities had pressed others to leave and used their community clout to help with transportation, there would have been far less scenes of people being picked up from roof tops. If these people had listened to their Mayor’s warnings to leave they never would have experienced all that they cry about now.

Oh but she’s not going anywhere (except when she was removed by force) and is locking up with Jesse Jackson to complain about the race of workers taking part in the rebuilding efforts.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Treme activist Dyan French Cole and prominent businessmen including John Casbon and Erik Johnsen urged the council to recycle as much of the financial assistance as possible inside the region.

During an emotional, profanity-laced tirade, Cole, a fixture at council meetings for years, berated local law enforcement officials and the military for forcibly removing her from her neighborhood, where she said she oversaw her own private relief effort.

Cole also said she was aghast that workers who she described as “illegal aliens” had been brought in to New Orleans to assist in the hurricane cleanup even as residents were being prevented from returning. “Why aren’t able-bodied black men being allowed back in the city to rebuild their homes?” she asked.

As if Blacks are the only ones that were asked to leave! And if those able bodied Black men had hurricane and flood insurance, given that they lived in a city that is below sea level. They would have a much easier time at rebuilding or whatever else they wished to do! And if they are so able-bodied, then tell them to apply for a job with Halliburton. I am glad that there are efforts to root out the illegals, but it’s obvious this woman only sees the world in terms of race.

A former NAACP leader, regular loudmouth at meetings, prison conditions group member and the list goes on, is about as Leftist as one can get without being a Black Panther party member like Hodges. And Mama D seemed to have trouble speaking at the Congressional hearing, although she seemed able to speak and explain plenty everywhere else! At the Congressional hearing she told Congressman Shays things like “this is how I talk” and was not answering the questions directly unless pressed to do so. I think it was all part of the game.

All one big opportunity to bash Bush and cry racism, in hopes of government giving them more. Oh yea they said everyone disappointed them, but they spent most of their time on BUSH when it came to talking about officials.

These race baiters ignore that places like Mississippi are also having some issues with Federal efforts. To mention them would mean having to give up the race card. Since many of the people affected in other states are not Black, also had to wait for rescue/relief and are trying to rebuild too.

For folks like Mama D to admit that government is treating Blacks like anyone else in a similar situation, would probably destroy their meaning in life. Because their current meaning in life is to complain and hope they can get more from taxpayers in the name of RACE.

As Larry Elder’s father said. “They are still crying we shall overcome and we already overcame”!

update (12/9/2005 4:31PM ET):
The Gateway Pundit has coverage of the media circus over the hearing and has found that most of the dead people who have been identified and relased to families are not Black.
