Does the Baltimore Sun have a Michael Steele cookie fixation?

by @ 12:09 am. Filed under Nuts on Parade

To me the evidence shows either they do, or they enjoy avoiding a Conservative speaking his mind on the issues!

If you take a look at the Baltimore Sun’s Maryland Politics section, you will notice that almost every article listed for the month of November that is related to Michael Steele is either about cookies or something relatively negative. Here is what I found:

Nov 18, 2005: Democrats gnaw at Oreos incident
Nov 17, 2005: 4 laptops stolen from Steele campaign
Nov 15, 2005: Steele weighs in on the Oreo incident
Nov 14, 2005: Exchange highlights campaign’s racial tension
Nov 13, 2005: Ehrlich bristles at Oreo skeptics
Nov 11, 2005: Club admits black member
Nov 7, 2005: Steele could face challenge in attracting black voters
Nov 4, 2005: Democrats’ criticism of Steele denounced by GOP, Steele to lead Israel trade trip
Nov 3, 2005: Article prompts cry of racism

And yesterday the paper released an Op-Ed about the cookie incident!

Out of 10 “news” stories about Michael Steele in the month of November 2005, 30% were about nothing but the cookie incident, 50% speak of racial issues in regards to Michael Steele’s campaign, 1 article (10%) is about laptops stolen from his office and another article (10%) is about his Israel trade trip.

Not including the Op-Ed (which I did not find to be positive), 80% of the Baltimore Sun’s articles in their politics section that were related to Michael Steele all dealt with race based matters. All from a negative light of Mr. Steele being attacked, having to defend against attacks or questioning attacks against him. 90% were about something bad. And the 1 article (10%) about something positive (Israel trade trip) was only 71 words long! The Israel trip was not a campaign related trip. So you could say, that 100% of Baltimore Sun political articles about Michael Steele’s campaign so far in the month of November 2005 were about something bad!

What the Baltimore Sun has done for the month of November is to totally block the sun from Michael Steele’s message. While Conservative talk shows have brought up matters like the cookie incident, Michael Steele has also had an opportunity during those interviews to speak about his view on the issues. He has had a chance to speak of positive support he has received from Blacks in MD and across the nation. But in Maryland’s leading newspaper, the Baltimore Sun there has been almost nothing but negative race based stories.

There have been more positive stories about his potential opponents. Here is what I found:

Nov 16, 2005: Cardin finds support among black clergy
Nov 8, 2005: Mfume picks up endorsements
Nov 8, 2005: To Kaufman, the debate counts more than victory
Nov 7, 2005: Mfume-Cardin contest open

As you can see, although less is published about Mr. Steele’s opponents, much of it is far more positive in nature.

Some have accused Michael Steele’s campaign of trying to avoid the issues, but it is obvious who really wants to blur the issues!

Looking at the Baltimore Sun’s articles, one would think Mr. Steele was running to be Senator of Black Marylanders only! When will the largest newspaper in the state of Maryland treat Mr. Steele like he is running for an office to be voted on by all Marylanders?
