Accused courthouse shooting suspect Brian Nichols had been communicating via letters with another inmate about a plot to break out of the Fulton County Jail, officials said Tuesday after discovering letters in the men’s cells.

The letters were turned over to the Fulton County district attorney’s office, and the jail officials are now looking into how they were being exchanged.

“His [Nichols'] cell is pretty much secluded,” Adams-Hightower said. “He’s not able to slide a letter down the hall or under someone’s door.”

Both Nichols and the other inmate are in a special section of the jail, separated from most of the inmate population. Nichols is kept in his cell most of the time, except for shower and recreation breaks.

As law enforcement officials conducted their frantic search that day, they found a handwritten list of names in his jail cell and placed some of those people into protective custody. The list included his former girlfriend’s relatives and her boyfriend.
