Cheney pushes Senate for CIA exemption regarding proposed “ban on torture” legislation and I agree with him!

The Vice President is attempting to have the Senate provide an exemption in certain cases for the use of tactics that some might call “torture”. I think Dick Cheney is right to seek the exemption.

Cheney pushes Senate for CIA exemption

WASHINGTON — Vice President Dick Cheney made an unusual personal appeal to Republican senators this week to allow CIA exemptions to a proposed ban on the torture of terror suspects in U.S. custody, according to participants in a closed-door session.

Cheney told his audience the United States doesn’t engage in torture, these participants added, even though he said the administration needed an exemption from any legislation banning “cruel, inhuman or degrading” treatment in case the president decided one was necessary to prevent a terrorist attack.

As Cheney points out, they don’t want to have anyone “drawn and quartered”, but the definition of the word “torture” has become so broad that there are complaints about playing loud music in a prisoner’s ears. The bottom line is that some levels of pressure and stress do yield results in the form of information, when used on certain individuals.

Everyone knows if a killer had their loved one tied to a time bomb and they could bring that killer under physical control, that they would probably use some tactics to extract information to remove the bomb! Tactics that some might call “torture”. I consider that bomb going off to be something WORSE than torture!

And it might be a harsh comparison, but many a street thug has found all out torture to be effective in their efforts to take down rivals. Even children know that twisting another kid’s arm can be an effective means of coercion! So we should end this myth that it is not effective. It’s been a highly effective means of gathering information for literally thousands of years!

When the CIA has a suspect that they strongly feel knows information that they need to extract, they need the flexibility to try various methods to get the information.
