New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is upset Mexicans are taking part in the effort to rebuild New Orleans.

I’m sure if Mexicans were sending him money he would be more than happy to accept it. But Mexicans coming to New Orleans to do work and help repopulate the area are getting a stiff rebuke!

I think I should mention before continuing further, that I dislike illegal immigration as much as anyone. Where I live we’ve got plenty of people living in the area that we know are illegals. To hear of INS locking some up is not unusual for us at all. To see on our local news illegals being the targets of crime, because thieves know they will be less likely to report crimes to the police is a regular occurrence. To see Latino criminals targeting other Latinos for this very same reason is also a regular part of that. So I know all too well about living in an area with a lot of illegals. And we do have plenty of legal immigrants also. In our schools not too long ago the demographic shifted to a majority Latino and Asian population. I sold my last home to a Latino family. I want to make clear I am personally familiar with living in an area with a high population of both legal and illegal immigrants. I have no problem with the legal immigrants and as I’ve mentioned I even sold one such family my former home. It is the illegals that I take issue with and I wish our President would do even more to close our borders to illegal immigrants!

Given the current anger over illegal immigration, it seems many people’s racial hatred is showing! Many are not just against illegal immigration, but against people who don’t look like them in general and speaking against illegals gives them an excuse to vent their racist attitudes! While I support the Minuteman Project 100%, even the founder of that effort discovered that he had to carefully screen out racist zealots! Well given New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin’s buddy chat with Louis Farrakhan, it is no surprise that he has shown himself to be one of those racist himself! He and many of New Orleans’ business owners have decided to not just stand against illegal immigrants, but Mexicans in general.

News Busters has a full transcript and video link of a CBS News report where Mayor Nagin says:

Nagin: How do I make sure that New Orleans is not overrun by Mexican workers?

The response from the crowd was a round of applause with some standing up while clapping!

The reporter Byron Pitts sounds very empathetic to people like Nagin and closes his report with the statement:

Pitts: The worry here: Will it look like the old New Orleans when it’s over? Byron Pitts, CBS News, New Orleans.

Other reports show that many of the former inhabitants of the area have no plans of returning:

New Orleans leaders upset that cleanup jobs are going to out-of-state workers

Mayor Ray Nagin is weighing in on the matter. He wants to know “How do I ensure that New Orleans is not overrun by Mexican workers?”

But interviews with some Katrina refugees suggest New Orleanians are in no big hurry to return for these jobs. In fact, many Katrina refugees have been landing jobs in communities around the country.

Here in Georgia our state has taken in thousands of evacuees and many have found jobs in the area. Areas all over the nation have been trying to help these people survive and get back on their feet! Granted some of them were living off government before and some seem to continue looking to government now, but that’s another issue for another post.

The bottom line is this. New Orleans needs to be rebuilt as quickly as possible. Which is why Preisdent Bush rightfully suspended legislation like The Davis-Bacon Act. The National Black Chamber of Commerce was trying to get this act removed for years, because it was created to keep Blacks from getting contract jobs! The page below is a copy from the Internet Archive of their former position on the act. A position that they held for years!!! Now you cannot find the following page on their site. Sometime after hurricane Katrina this page suddenly stopped working…. (I was able to connect to the page with no problem back on 9/16/2005. But it stopped working some time after that.)

Davis Bacon Helper Rules (Archived Jun 19, 2004)

CONGRESSIONAL TESTIMONY PRESENTED TO: SUBCOMMITTEE ON OVERSIGHT AND INVESTIGATIONS COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE

TESTIMONY PRESENTED BY:
HARRY C. ALFORD
PRESIDENT & CEO
NATIONAL BLACK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

JULY 21, 1999

The National Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc. is the largest Black trade association in the world. It has 181 affiliated chapters located in 35 states and represents over 64,000 Black owned firms. We are currently collaborating with Black owned businesses in Ghana, Brazil and the Bahamas in the quest of business interaction and chapter development.

We were incorporated, here in Washington, DC, in the spring of 1993. In early 1994, we formed a position on the Davis Bacon Act. We advocate the repeal of Davis Bacon. It is discriminatory by nature and works to the detriment of small businesses, including Black owned businesses and Black families.

The Davis Bacon Act has racist roots. It was enacted to prevent Black owned firms from the South to migrate to New York City and compete on construction contracts. These firms, employing descendants of skilled slave craftsmen, were soon blocked from the huge New York market and were forced to return to the Jim Crow environment of Alabama, Georgia, etc.

The exclusivity effect of Davis Bacon requirements encourages the construction trades to continue its activity of discrimination against African American labor. Locally, regionally and nationally construction trades under-represent the African American population. Go to any city or look at any major project and you will find a great disparity against African American labor.

So now the Act has been suspended and some are upset because another minority group is accepting jobs! The suspension of the act allows companies to rebuild quickly with a willing labor force. Of course they charge more than they pay, the idea of a company is to make a profit. But the more that employees must be paid the higher the cost to rebuild and that cost will be paid by taxpayers! So the lower priced work results in a lower burden on us taxpayers!!!!

It is sad to see that some are turning opportunity into racism! Anyone from New Orleans that wants a job should go looking for themselves. If they cannot accept a wage as low as some other workers, then suck it up and get a job somewhere else! Having said that I think heavy enforcement against illegals should be taking place in New Orleans and across this nation!

Criminal evacuees take their crime to other cities!

You can take a thug out of the hood, but you can’t take the hood out of the thug!

Where in the world is….RAY NAGIN?!!!

When he’s not trying to prevent Mexicans from living in his city, he’s out cooling his heals in Jamaica!

  3. Independent Conservative Says:

Well when White officials said they wanted to “keep it White” everybody was upset!

Now New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin says he wants his city to be Black and that is the way “God” wanted it. Isn’t that how the racist in the time of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used to talk about how “God” wanted Whites where…
