Maxwell High School of Technology folds on banning anti-abortion clothing

by @ 5:45 pm. Filed under Evangelicals Under Attack, The Truth Shall Set you Free!

BrianIn a victory for all who know “Abortion is Homicide”, a Gwinnett County public school has backed off attempts to prevent student Brian Ramirez from wearing clothing that carries the phrase! Brian, who attends Maxwell High School of Technology every school day morning for a three-hour auto collision repair technology class, would at times wear shirts that carried statements like “Abortion is Homicide” on the front and “You will not silence my message; you will not mock my God, and you will stop killing my generation.” on the back. He is a senior at Collins Hill High School. While the administration at Collins Hill High School never expressed any issues with his clothing, a teacher at Maxwell did start taking issue with his choice of shirts some days. He was asked to remove his shirt or turn it inside out. The teacher says he had heard some complaints from others in the school about the shirts. Brian refused and was given a ZERO for the day, every day he wore a shirt that the teacher objected to.

The linked article above mentions:

The assistant principal told Ramirez that he was disciplined not because of what his sweat shirt said, but because he disobeyed his teacher’s request.

Now if he was wearing all white shoes and the teacher said take them off, I doubt the school would have gone along with disciplinary action! Although the assistant principal attempts to spin the issue, this is all about the content on the shirt!

Well Brian’s parents contacted ACLU killers The Alliance Defense Fund. (The best Anti-ACLU group in the land :D !) Also Brian’s issue started getting national attention among various pro-life circles. After that attention and a strongly worded letter from the ADF, Brian’s record has been cleaned and all zeros removed!

The ADF letter to the school principle mentions:

It is imperative that Brian’s constitutional rights be restored immediately. In light of the immediacy of these issues, and due to the fact that Brian is being suspended on a continuing basis, please notify my office in writing by close of business tomorrow, Friday, October 28, 2005, that the school will no longer prohibit Brian, or any other student, from wearing such messages. We also request that the suspensions immediately cease, that any “0” he has received be removed from his grades, that he be permitted to make up lost work without any penalty, and that his file be expunged of any information or documentation related to this incident. If we fail to hear from you by tomorrow, or if his rights continue to be violated, we will inform our client of his right to seek redress in federal court.

And the rest is history! Brian can wear his shirts and express his feelings as a child who is against the murder of children in the womb!

I say job well done!

The “black armbands” reference in the ADF letter is regarding the US Supreme Court Case Tinker v. Des Moines (1969). You can read summaries of that case and other related cases at the following web sites:
