In what should have been the top news story everywhere yesterday, Iraq’s new Constitution was approved by voters and monitors verified the vote to be accurate!
Iraq constitution vote accurate, UN says
Election results showing Iraqis have ratified a new US-backed constitution by a large margin are accurate and should be trusted, a senior UN official has said.
Speaking after Iraq’s Electoral Commission released final results showing 79 per cent approval for the constitution in the October 15 referendum, Carina Perelli said the balloting process adhered to the highest standard.
“Yes, it has been audited, controlled. It has been done really in a very professional way,” Ms Perelli, head of the UN team providing technical assistance to the Iraqi government, told reporters.

Final results released on Tuesday showed 79 per cent of voters backed the charter and 21 per cent opposed it nationwide, with 63 per cent turnout.
A veto would have been possible had more than two thirds of voters in three provinces rejected the measure.
But of Iraq’s 18 provinces only two ended up mustering a two-thirds “No” vote.
US officials sponsoring the political process had described the election, in which many of the disaffected Sunni Arab minority took part, as a success for Iraqi democracy.

And so the war was won and the transition is in full motion. But some people are always going to find something to complain about. Today’s success proves no death in the effort was in vain!
Hat tip to Michelle Malkin for exposing the critics.
