C. Delores Tucker and Vivian Malone Jones, rest in peace

c_tuckerTwo powerful Civil Rights icons have passed. First I will mention C. Delores Tucker who died at 78 on Wednesday. Let me tell you this blog would not exist without her influence in my life. Before hearing her speak at my Alma Mater Morgan State University I felt the trash in music was just a form of “art”. And that it was “not that bad”. She in a single speech showed me the rising problem that I had to help fight! Going into the speech I did not like her and felt she was just a loud mouth giving kids a hard time. I left that speech in awe with total respect for her! While she was a big time Democrat, she was on the right side of the culture war when it came to trash in music. She literally said words that changed my opinion, by offering insight into the issue back when smut was not even ruling the charts like it does today.

But she stepped into the national spotlight in 1993, when she began campaigning against obscenity and misogyny in rap music lyrics and videos.
“She just wanted the music to be more positive, with a message, and she befriended many of our young people making rap music,” said E. Faye Williams, interim chairwoman of the National Congress of Black Women.
In the early 1990s, Mrs. Tucker said “gangsta” rap by groups such as N.W.A. and “porno” rap by groups such as 2 Live Crew were corrupting black youth and led the fight against such music, including advocating its censorship on radio and television.
“Most people didn’t want to hear that or hear her complain about it, saying it was art and music. But she was fierce at that, and I hope that doesn’t get washed away,” said Julian Bond, executive chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Even a broken clock like Julian Bond can get the time right twice a day I guess… Mrs. Tucker, I am deeply saddened by your passing. I will work to continue your struggle to fight this trash that has taken over Black culture today! While I take a more Conservative approach to some matters than you may have, you have my eternal respect! I pray you rest in peace with the Lord.

Also Vivian Malone Jones passed away on Thursday at age 63. This woman stood up to George Wallace who attempted to block her entry into the University of Alabama! I feel people like George Wallace discredited the label of “Conservative” given he could not respect the CONSTITUTIONAL guarantee of equal protection provided by the 14th Amendment!

Article XIV.

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

That Amendment was enacted to counter “black codes” which were used to limit the rights of newly freed slaves in 1868. Vivian Malone Jones helped to ensured that the US Constitution was enforced in all states by fighting in one of toughest at the time when it came to racial matters.

Vivian Malone Jones, one of two black students whose effort to enroll at the University of Alabama led to George Wallace’s infamous “stand in the schoolhouse door” in 1963, died Thursday. She was 63.

At an appearance last year in Mobile, she recalled meeting with Wallace in 1996, when the former governor was in frail health. He died in 1998.

“I asked him why did he do it,” she said. “He said he did what he felt needed to be done at that point in time, but he would not do that today. At that point, we spoke — I spoke — of forgiveness.”

    This was a woman of courage.

    D - It is sad that in our community we have a group of people who are profiting greatly from pimping certain words and images to us that have attacked this great woman who’s only goal was to not allow these pimps to have their way with our community and the images that are flowing into it.

    In today’s world it is so true that “what was wrong is now right and what was right is now wrong”.

    Sadly these very same people who are pulling the bricks out of the foundation one by one are the main one’s complaining about how THE SYSTEM is screwing them and all of this is due to racism.

    The Black community don’t need more “leaders”. We need more people who are willing to TELL THE TRUTH.

    Some folks never want to hear that someone with a darker skin tone is doing something wrong. Sadly for many folks the money justifies anything. Sometimes some Blacks will blame non-Blacks that were running these record companies. But if you look at who runs the Urban music departments today there are many Black faces in charge of this mess.

    Also many people do not realize that when Mrs. Tucker took her issue to the record company excutives BILL BENNETT WAS RIGHT THERE WITH HER BY HER SIDE!!! He was always working with her on the issue and he also was being attacked then along with her.
