The President could unite the nation overnight with one simple action. It is something you’ve heard before and something most Americans want. One morning the President should step in front of cameras on the White House lawn and say “I have just signed an executive order to position 10,000 US troops on the US/Mexico border”. Immediately he would be credited as the hero who did not avoid the “elephant in the room” .

The border issue is a concern that unites all Americans. Everyone except illegals and their few sympathizers want illegal immigration to continue. And 10,000 troops would be a small enough number to spare while not affecting other military operations. Honestly it probably would not be enough to give our Southern border solid protection from all illegal flow from Mexico (and those that pass through Mexico from other nations), but it would be enough to make a statement and prove Bush really wants to treat this as a security issue.

Yes I know, the President has increased the number of border patrol officers, increased funding (what has he not increased funding for ), pushed for better technology to be used and so on. But sorry, that is not enough when an entire nation knows you could order troops to that border now and make it happen in time to celebrate it as America’s Christmas gift!

Bottom line is, despite all the effort Bush really has put into this issue. If a single major terrorist attack occurs as a result of our open borders Bush along with Presidents before him that did nothing will all be to blame! And please stop this nonsense about the “guest worker program” fixing this problem. It will not! There won’t be enough guest worker passes to meet the demand of all who want to enter. So the illegal flow will continue. Which makes for a profitable business in Mexico to carry people near the boarder for them to cross. Which makes an easy route of entry for terrorists, drugs, hidden slave labor, you name it!

With this single announcement, all the media contrived Conservative infighting about the Supreme Court pick will vanish! Poor Americans will worry a little less about high gas prices, because they’ll feel they have a better chance at a low wage job! All the talk about illegals doing jobs nobody else will do is bogus! Many illegals do jobs other Americans would like to do. And Americans were doing the jobs before they came! (Although our abundance of social programs does not encourage some folks to work.) Everyone would support the War on Terrorism if it also included keeping the door closed to illegals at what is currently the most porous access point!

Employers of illegals are just being given an easy method to avoid America’s free market of employable people. The last time American businesses were allow to prop themselves up with cheap labor it was child labor and before that slavery. In order for capitalism to ebb and flow properly it cannot continue to have false props under it. Right now illegal labor is a false prop holding up companies that otherwise should go out of business because they are not suitable to compete in the marketplace or the companies should find a wage that meets legal American demand.

There are other issues at play here that could also help. Too much regulation keeps many businesses from growing with US citizens as employees. Changes in the tax code are needed such as a change to the Fair Tax. This would ease the tax burden on companies that hire US Citizens. And what’s the point of a Federal Minimum Wage when we know plenty of people are getting paid less than that every day to do things like pick fruit?!!! No need for the minimum wage laws. It’s feel good legislation that hurts the lowest skilled and poorest Americans, although they may not realize it.

Despite the other issues the President announcing troops on the boarder would be a good first step! So Mexico would get angry, but better they be angry than we face threats via an open border!
